Joyo Ross Compressor clone

Ok, I've really been liking this compressor alot and have no desire to replace it, but it seemed a little TOO bright and jangley [not a bad thing, but my set up is pretty bright already.]
I looked around more closely and noticed it really is a close clone of the old ROSS compressor, even uses the proper sc1849 transistors like the original and script Dyna Comp,[most clones are using 2n3904's or 2n5088's] a ca3080 ic and reverse 500k sustain pot.But one big difference in the Joyo from the original Ross is a small yellow 120pf cap from input to ground, the Ross uses 220pf here. This cap is partially responsible for the trebel content, and 220pf really warmed and fattened it up.I settled on 180pf.This is a great sounding comp!

Heres a quote from Analog Mike over at DIY Stompboxes:
''To make a script logo dynacomp, the transistors are the biggest change but too hard to find the old 2SC1849 now. And you need to test them for noise and gain. The dynacomp and ross were DESIGNED around the 2SC1849, maybe that's why they sound and work best?''

I really dont buy in to mojo parts at all, but was surprised to find the Joyo uses similar transistors!

Are you talking about the green Dyna Compressor
with the idiotic scorpion on it?

Yes, it is pretty good. I have one. But for being
a Ross clone it doesn't have the intense "suck"
effect when the sustain is cranked. This leads me
to believe there are other changes to the circuit.

I picked one of these up a few days ago when my BYOC Ross Clone started acting up (sustain knob didn't really have any affect....it was like it was all the way up all the time). It's much more subtle than the BYOC, even after adjusting the trim pots. I may try the cap mod as well, it's way more trebley than i was expecting , and that's no good with a tele and a blackfaced bassman

DR. Pants, your right its alot more subtle in the squash department, something I like alot as I never ran the sustain over 9 o'clock on my old dyna comp. But your right, its not a very squishy comp, certainly something else is going on there.Unfortunatly the stripes are smuged off of most of my resistors and its a multi layer board so I cant tell what the difference is

This is one for the rocket scientists over at Freestompboxes.

I've just finished swapping out the 120pf for a 220pf. I'll
be trying it out shortly. Thanks for sharing the info you had.

This mod really does improve the pedal. I'm
really grateful you discovered this and passed it on.

^ You bet! It really is a great sounding compressor, no need to spend $200 on a comp when these things are around!
