taxer July 9th, 2012, 07:38 PM OK, folks, here you can confess. Get it off your chest. Admit any dumb guitar gear purchase.
I'll go first.
I have not one, but two amps with beautiful built in chorus (a Roland Jazz Chorus and a Fender Princeton Chorus), yet I bought a BOSS Chorus pedal.
I confess my stupid purchase...but I don't feel better.
e-merlin July 9th, 2012, 07:47 PM Guess I'll have to go with my Weber MASS. Don't get me wrong, it's a great piece of equipment with my Classic 30, but it just doesn't help out with the one thing I bought it for, my 5150 Combo. The 5150 just loves to be loud. The Classic 30 can be tamed, but the 5150, not so much.
BBill64 July 9th, 2012, 07:49 PM Uh, I bought some push-fit knobs without realising that they wouldn't fit the solid shaft pots on my Tele?
I also bought a Little Big Muff Pi and, while it was a good sounding pedal, it only really did one sound and that was it. So that went back on eBay. The thing is, I'm starting to think similar thoughts about my Boss FZ-3. If anyone can recommend a decent, cheap fuzz pedal/kit please PM me (so as not to derail what is sure to be an excellent thread ).
Seasicksailor July 9th, 2012, 08:01 PM Boss ME20 multi-effect thingy... it was before I had really experienced the difference between digital and analogue. At least it was useful in teaching me the difference and it has a pretty good tuner on it.
I first suspected there was something going on when I got myself a Vox ac15c1... as soon as I got it, a very non-violent friend of mine said something like: "Great amp congratulations! But if I see you plug that Boss into it, I will kill you with my bare hands". He was right... I never told him that I tried it! :-D
RollingThunder75 July 9th, 2012, 08:35 PM I bought one of those Vox Brian May Deacy amps they sold a few years ago. It's a one trick pony if there ever was one. Sadly, it's a trick I'll never have the ability nor the other gear to perform. I still have the amp, though, because I don't know what to do with it. Plus, it's kinda pretty.
czgibson July 9th, 2012, 08:42 PM I bought a Behringer Delay pedal once, just because it was there, it was cheap and I didn't know any better. Completely useless piece of kit. Just impossible to get a usable sound out of it.
jackal July 9th, 2012, 08:46 PM Boss acoustic simulator.
Seasicksailor July 9th, 2012, 08:48 PM I bought a Behringer Delay pedal once, just because it was there, it was cheap and I didn't know any better. Completely useless piece of kit. Just impossible to get a usable sound out of it.
I almost did that a couple of weeks ago... not sure what stopped me but I'm glad you confirm my decision!
ataylor8287 July 9th, 2012, 09:02 PM An Emperor 6x12 cab. Although it sounded awesome, it was completely impractical. It weighed in at over 100lbs. I played one show with it and then decided it had to go.
Ed P July 9th, 2012, 09:08 PM There's been so many over the years I can't face any of them.
Seasicksailor July 9th, 2012, 09:10 PM An Emperor 6x12 cab. Although it sounded awesome, it was completely impractical. It weighed in at over 100lbs. I played one show with it and then decided it had to go.
Did you just leave it on the stage? That's what I would have done!
Chris Browne July 9th, 2012, 09:11 PM VT Lunchbox. I feel a little better - thanks OP.
slotrod65 July 9th, 2012, 09:17 PM When I got back into playing guitar after a 12 year hiatus, I bought a Charvel Surfcaster copy: Kokocaster on the internet. 1) I had never played one before, but it looked kinda Rick-ey, and had lipstick pickups, and 2) It was new.
http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/slotrod65/Kokocaster/Kokocaster05.jpg
Now, it was a good guitar, but it felt and played like a Gibson, and I am a Fender and Danelectro kinda guy. Plus, the sound of the lipsticks was not jangle.
Since I bought it new, I lost my shirt when I sold it.
Lunchie July 9th, 2012, 09:20 PM I almost did that a couple of weeks ago... not sure what stopped me but I'm glad you confirm my decision!
I did do that, still sitting in the back seat of my truck... it was $8... didnt think i could go wrong.
DrumBob July 9th, 2012, 09:21 PM An Italia Modulo Tipo III, an absolutely POS if there ever was one. It looked cool, but played like a complete turd. The bridge was set into the body wrong so it wouldn't intonate, and it wouldn't stay in tune no matter what was done to it. It was blue sparkle with a distinctive pickguard. I loved the looks, but hated the way it played.
This is the red sparkle model. Take my advice; don't ever buy one!
Johmo July 9th, 2012, 09:24 PM Epi Valve Special POS. Anyone want to buy it?
Other bad gear I have owned: Crate IIR (with extension speaker); Peavey Bandit; Bently LP copy; Bently Acoustic; Rockman (II I believe); Farfisa organ; Korg synth of some type.
Johmo July 9th, 2012, 09:25 PM Forgot about the Hondo Longhorn Guitarlin. Unplayable. WTF was I thinking?
P Thought July 9th, 2012, 09:38 PM I've been pretty satisfied with all my purchases I can think of, but I've made 'way too many of them altogether. Sometimes I wish I'd just stayed with the two acoustic guitars I bought in the first place, only bought better ones to start with, and I don't really need so many electrics or so many amps. I've given away lots of the stuff I bought; I'd rather do that than hassle with selling it.
I have bought a couple acoustics that were less playable than I wish they'd been, and spent money that I wish I'd saved for something else.
Highlander64 July 9th, 2012, 09:39 PM I bought a berhinger slow motion... What was I thinking!
Prison Rodeo July 9th, 2012, 11:04 PM eBay casualty: Yamaha Pacifica 112 with a mis-matched Yamaha "samurai" neck on which the owner had scalloped the fingerboard himself. With ... some sort of power tool. Not sure.
I love Pacificas, but this was a real abortion of a guitar. Complete mess.
I took it apart, and the pieces now live in my basement workshop, waiting to be cannibalized (though the neck is a lost cause).
wmsimpson July 9th, 2012, 11:06 PM I bought an '05 MIK Epiphone Les Paul '56 Goldtop for $300 last Friday... great condition, real pretty, plays good, but sounds meh. Dumb move on my part.
Lee Harvey July 9th, 2012, 11:12 PM I bought a Gretsch...
Dumbest thing I ever did..
Couldn't get rid of fast enough... I sold it so cheap the Guy that bought it thought I was Santa...
studio1087 July 9th, 2012, 11:15 PM craigslist impulse Faded V .......47 years old and I bought a V in a parking lot. It slid off my knee. It was silly (for me). Sold this that baby on craigslsit. Full circle.......

Warm Gums July 9th, 2012, 11:33 PM I bought a Telecaster..
15 or so years ago, thinkinking it would be fun to have "a" guitar again and play a few songs on ocassion.
Silly me..such a slippery slope :-)
Highlander64 July 9th, 2012, 11:35 PM I bought a Telecaster..
15 or so years ago, thinkinking it would be fun to have "a" guitar again and play a few songs on ocassion.
Silly me..such a slippery slope :-)
Telecasters are great why do you regret buying one?
oramac7891 July 9th, 2012, 11:38 PM Bought a Gibson es135 copy off eBay. Didn't say Gibson or anything, but I convinced myself that a true hollow body with two pickups, binding and blue burst would still be a great guitar, even if it was only 139.99 with free shipping. Poured money into new hardware, pickups, and wiring. Know what I had after that? A guitar that still played like a cardboard box with strings. Sold it on CL to a guy that didn't even want to plug it into my amp, he didn't play it or really anything. Just gave me my money and left. I guess he figured a 100 buck guitar was a 100 buck guitar.
ludashoeless July 9th, 2012, 11:43 PM Telecasters are great why do you regret buying one?
i think he was making a joke saying that now he cant stop buying them

I see what you did there....
ROADMAN July 10th, 2012, 01:16 AM bought a Martin Backpacker (turd on a strap) off C/L.....fortunately got my money back from a resale .....AAAC...avoid at all costs
tehanallang July 10th, 2012, 02:08 AM My Zoom B2.1u 3 years ago after buying my first bass. What a waste...that and more recently the Digitech Bad Monkey...It's not too bad but there's other offerings from Boss that sound a lot better.
twiggymac July 10th, 2012, 02:13 AM the first guitar, that led to thousands of dollars of more over the years......JUST KIDDING.
but in all honesty my most embarrassing is probably my first one, an acoustic electric ibanez talman. really not the best guitar at all...
dannew02 July 10th, 2012, 02:16 AM Mine would be trading my Mom's 20+ year old Epiphone acoustic (which sounded great, btw) for a distortion pedal. Which broke in less than a month. Hey, the 80's were a magical time that will hopefully never happen again. And I hope my Mom never reads this...
soulman969 July 10th, 2012, 03:09 AM Yeah, the second time I bought a Gibson Bass. The guy needed the money and I must have been high or something. God I hated those things.
Hoopermazing July 10th, 2012, 03:14 AM Telecasters are great why do you regret buying one?
I believe that he was saying, facetiously, that he regrets getting hooked.
Seasicksailor July 10th, 2012, 03:26 AM I bought an '05 MIK Epiphone Les Paul '56 Goldtop for $300 last Friday... great condition, real pretty, plays good, but sounds meh. Dumb move on my part.
If you like everything else apart from the sound, a pup and/or electronics upgrade should fix it.
renhoek July 10th, 2012, 07:15 AM I bought a very beat-up Rickenbacker 330 just because it was from my birth year, 1992. Not only did I have endless problems with it due to the previous owner not looking after it very well, but I also realised that I'm just not the type of person who owns a Rickenbacker. I'm still trying to sell it.
Bob Mc July 10th, 2012, 07:52 AM A vintage banjolin. Inspired by David Grisman and possibly a fourth glass o wine.
It was like a musical instrument, but it wasn't one.
RevMike July 10th, 2012, 07:59 AM I bought a Charvel Tele cheap once. Looked really cool. Bound black body, maple neck. Felt nice, sounded great unplugged.
When I got it home, and took it out, it seemed during the trip home the fret ends all pretty much popped out really badly. When I tried to play it....it scratched my hands all to bits. Pickups sounded awful too. Had a tech try to fix it, but it was futile.
I ended up trading it straight up for a MIM Strat. I was much happier.
twangjeff July 10th, 2012, 09:03 AM Back in the day I bought a Fender HM Strat and that thing was the biggest hunk of junk ever! It had these really nasty sounding Dimarzio pickups and a Khaler tremolo that took at least an hour to restring. That was the coolest guitar in the world the first two weeks I owned it, after that I couldn't get rid of it soon enough!
7171551 July 10th, 2012, 09:10 AM There's been so many over the years I can't face any of them.
+1
wmsimpson July 10th, 2012, 09:19 AM If you like everything else apart from the sound, a pup and/or electronics upgrade should fix it.
I guess I just don't like it enough to spend another couple hundred bucks to make it sound better.
charlie chitlin July 10th, 2012, 09:31 AM I couldn't bring myself to spend the coin on a Gretsch Bo Diddley.
So I bought a Bo Jr.
21.5 inch scale.
Kinda cool, but.....not.
6942 July 10th, 2012, 09:40 AM I saw a late 60's DECCA guitar with a mirrored pick guard a two Teisco Gold Foil pick-ups.
Looked GREAT....totally unplayable (fixed neck).
Eventually I removed the nice-sounding pick-ups for a project guitar.
Steve
VK7HSE July 10th, 2012, 09:43 AM Zoom G1 multi thingy! Biggest tone robbing effect I've had the pleasure of purchasing!
Just sold it on ebay yesterday. I listed it thinking that the 7 days will yield not a thing, but was surprised when it sold.

Leep Dog July 10th, 2012, 09:54 AM I got back into playing a couple years ago and decided I needed a tube amp. After (very) little research (as I tend to just go out and buy stuff without too much thought...ha ha) I bought a Blackstar HT-5 combo. I had purchased a Vox VT-15 a few months before and after spending time with the Blackstar, I eventually decided I liked the modeling amp better. I returned the Blackstar to GC and traded it in for a Vox AC15....for only $150 more (new) I had an infinitely better amp. Why didn't I just get the AC15 from the start? Oh well, live and learn.

Warm Gums July 10th, 2012, 10:00 AM bought a Martin Backpacker (turd on a strap) off C/L.....fortunately got my money back from a resale .....AAAC...avoid at all costs
Yes..
It violates the first rule of instrument aquisition..
Avoid anything that looks like a prop from Star Trek...
JohnK24 July 10th, 2012, 10:22 AM Crate Power Block amp....yuck. Heck, even the Line 6 Flextone I had sounded better
spikypaddy July 10th, 2012, 10:40 AM I've had a few...
-Behringer wah pedal - simply awful!
-Boss PW-10 V-Wah - shocking modelling, near as dammit to unusable and very, very noisy.
-Boss Metal Zone - c'mon, I was only 15 at the time!
-Marshall JTM60 1x12 combo - unbelievably unreliable, an eBay purchase. Can't believe I sold a 4 input, non-master volume JCM800 half stack to fund it!
-Gibson SG Standard - didn't even play it before buying because it was dirt cheap for a 6 month old guitar. It was a total dog. At least I got my money back on it, I guess.

Ah the boss wah, perhaps the most complicated pedal ever..
Just refolding the manual took 15 min.
Jakedog July 10th, 2012, 12:08 PM Looking at it right now. 2001 Epiphone "Slasher" Firebird.
Looks sooooo cool. And has tons of goofy fun factor. Built in chorus and distortion, cool metallic blue paint scheme, funky hockey stick explorer headstock, it's a hoot.
Like every other Epi I've ever tried, it's a piece of crap. Just doesn't play all that well, and never will without a lot of money put into it, which ain't gonna happen.
I bought it for $100. It was so goofy I couldn't pass it up. Also found out it's exceedingly rare. Only 1000 Slashers were ever made. Of those, only 250 had the built in FX. Of those, I think 150 were black, the other 100 being red or blue. So, yeah, super rare guitar. But also totally worthless.
Oh well, it's makes great conversation piece, and it's $100 I didn't spend killing myself with milkshakes or cigs.
wallis222 July 10th, 2012, 12:20 PM Digitech RP100. It was about 8 years ago, and I was brand new to the game. What a hunk of poo.
rickwxi July 10th, 2012, 12:25 PM The Boss Acoustic Simulator AC-3. I thought I could use it with my Telecaster with the band and not have to carry one of my acoustic guitars along. Boy was I wrong, it does not even come close to an acoustic sounding guitar... Maybe it is not ment to use a Telecaster with it..
LarsOS July 10th, 2012, 12:39 PM Fender CD140SCE BK. If you look at the button for the inbuilt tuner the wrong way (or maybe if you don't look at it enough), it turns itself on and drains the battery. Plus, something is buzzing when I pick the open G string. And it sounds dull in general, and is uninspiring to play. I bought it in Prague, and thought it was a good deal for that very reason ('cause everything is cheap in Czech, not just the food and beer ... right?).
Stupid? Well, that's what this thread is about, isn't it? At least now I know why Fender isn't known for the great quality of their acoustics.

MatthewDickin July 10th, 2012, 12:54 PM Epiphone Les Paul Standard. I wanted to try out a Les Paul. Loved the idea, HATED the guitar. It was just awful, and no amount of upgrades would have made it any better. Sold it at a loss after about four months, bought a MIJ Tokai LS150. Never looked back.
I've learnt my lesson. Buy cheap, buy twice.
Luthier Atlanta July 10th, 2012, 12:59 PM I don't think I've made one yet.
First purchase, Yamaha SE700HE from the original owner.
Case, Cord, Strings, Receipt, Slide,, all documented.
Perfect condition $50
Second guitar Strat ( 20th Anniversary) Squire Same deal, no case thou, Again $50
Third guitar Custom Telecaster mid 80's traded for a Titan .25 cal pocket Pistol which I had received a pair of them for free.... kept the best one and traded thee other.
binkydognose July 10th, 2012, 01:12 PM In the 70's I bought an Acoustic head plus a 4x12 cab with horns, played a Gibson L6S through it and used a Morley "power wah boost". I'm pretty happy that no recordings exist.
bossking7 July 10th, 2012, 01:16 PM MXR Block Phase 90. Awful pedal. Very harsh and distorted.
spikypaddy July 10th, 2012, 01:18 PM Ah the boss wah, perhaps the most complicated pedal ever..
Just refolding the manual took 15 min.
Oh yeah, I'd forgotten the manual! Just remembering how to change presets was an exercise in mental dexterity. And the drive sounds were... Unique!
After my experiences with complicated wahs, I just ended up buying a 2 week old Vox much better!
Teleglide July 10th, 2012, 01:39 PM A Dean Leslie West Signature guitar, bought pretty cheap on CL. One humbucker that measures 16K ohms DC resistance. The mushiest sounding pickup I've ever heard!
Revv23 July 10th, 2012, 02:23 PM Line 6 spider iii 112 was my first amp.
Sucked so bad i went and got a 2x12 hrdeville. Way too loud to use. Nice enough amp i guess.
Byoc wah kit was a waste of money like my dunlop wah more.
Kinman pups for my strat. Nice and everything but stupid money and i no longer like noise canceling pickups.
Id say i regret the spyder the most.

dngrsdave July 10th, 2012, 02:29 PM After pestering a Pawn Shop owner and playing almost all his stock of crappy guitars,(without realy wanting to buy anything). So I bought a Digitech DeathMetal pedal from him .
It does only one thing ,Sound Like DeathMetal.
Then a month ago I found a DigiTech Grunge pedal for cheap and just had to buy it.
It turns out to sound Exactly the same as the DeathMetal !
LOSTVENTURE July 10th, 2012, 02:43 PM How about a stupid "non-purchase"?
In 1963 I had a chance to get a 1959 Les Paul Standard for $100. I was saving for the new Fender Mustang, so I held off.
winny pooh July 10th, 2012, 02:49 PM Danelectro "foxx tone" green fuzz. Could never find a use for it, still trying. Won't sell it though.
Lil Big muff, would sell it but the power jack crapped out.
90's american standard strat, just the totally wrong guitar for me, insanely thick finish. Bland tone.
Telesavalis July 10th, 2012, 03:09 PM Line 6 Variax 500. Played it for maybe a year...Gave it away.
doof July 10th, 2012, 03:13 PM my very first guitar i bought from my summer job savings back in the 90's: A Squier Strat mini. i ended up trading it for a ridiculously heavy Vantage strat copy, which i eventually sold for $40.
pondcaster July 10th, 2012, 03:23 PM Some kind of Line6 pocketPOS.
Sounded like crap. Got it thinking I would use w/ headphones but that's not the way I play. Used it 3 times (1 hr). eBay > eBay full circle.
caliban335 July 10th, 2012, 03:36 PM A Squier '51. I allowed myself to get pulled into the orbit of the 51 modder community and bought one on eBay. As soon as I got it I realized it was a huge mistake. A total POS that was going to take a lot of time and effort to make into something that might be worthwhile.
caliban335 July 10th, 2012, 03:39 PM I bought a Gretsch...
Dumbest thing I ever did..
Couldn't get rid of fast enough... I sold it so cheap the Guy that bought it thought I was Santa...
What model did you purchase? I've never played a Gretsch I didn't like at least a little bit. That said, I've never played a Beast or a Committee, so I guess that leaves the door open a crack.
Big_Bend July 10th, 2012, 03:45 PM Around 1985 or so I bought some brand new Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates Humbucker pickups.
That I then had the store install in my completely stock 1969 USA Gibson Les Paul Classic Black Beauty. I didn't even think to ask for the original pickups back, I'm sure the guys in the guitar store thought I was insane, but they made the sale anyway... and kept the original pickups.
I still own that Les Paul, but why didn't I leave it stock? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Paul in Colorado July 10th, 2012, 04:33 PM DOD Supra Distortion. I needed a distortion pedal after not using one for many years. It sounded pretty good in the store, but it never sounded right with my rig. I also owned a Boss Metal Zone pedal for a while. I had it modded and I still hated it. Luckily, I was able to trade it for a Barber Direct Drive.
I traded my first Twin Reverb for a Music Man 130 head after reading that Mark Knopfler used one. I took it back two days later and got my Twin back.
telequacktastic July 10th, 2012, 04:54 PM 1994-I saw a 1969 Gibson SG Standard in a Pawn Shop for $199 and didn't buy it.
1999-2000 There was a string of fake Tom Anderson Guitarworks guitars floating around some nearby pawn shops. I bought one and took it to GC to trade it in thinking I might have made a decent return towards my Gibson Howard Roberts Fusion, where I learned it was a fake. But I ended up with the Gibby HoRo and I still got it today and still love it so... happy ending
losergeek July 10th, 2012, 06:44 PM I wouldn't necessarily call it a stupid purchase but i did pay 50$ for an old Harmony Flying V knowing fully well that it would probably just be a wall hanger. However in the meantime i did manage to get my hopes up that I could turn it into a player, so I was a little disappointed when I finally had to come to grips with the fact that the neck was beyond hope. It still may become a flying T with an extra tele neck I have lying around.
tweedtone July 10th, 2012, 07:48 PM Pretty much every lead-type overdrive I've bought since purchasing an MI Audio Blues Pro Overdrive probably ten years ago. I keep coming back to it and wonder why I ever thought I'd find something better.
picknfool July 10th, 2012, 07:58 PM Boss acoustic simulator.
Yeah, me too- no good sounds in that thing. Don't know what I was thinking...
c.winn July 10th, 2012, 08:44 PM Digitech RP100. It was about 8 years ago, and I was brand new to the game. What a hunk of poo.
Make that two!
'though I remember mine having an expression pedal, whichever model that was. Thought it was an easy out compared to having a bunch of pedals......
......the only piece of gear I've ever returned. Brought it back to the GC I bought it from, and when entering it into the register, the clerk asked me why I was returning it. He looked at the box, then me, then the box again, and said "Yeah.....I get why."
Instant store credit. Best thing Digitech has ever done for me....
I could do nothing but play that boring Pantera riff. "Dung dunga dah duhn...dugga duhn WAH!" x2
Last time.....
Woody Duke July 10th, 2012, 09:26 PM Traded a '61 sunburst Strat for an Ampeg Dan Armstrong. DOH!
dmarg1045 July 10th, 2012, 09:34 PM Back in the winter I obsessed about building a big (for me) pedalboard. For a few months I went kinda nuts buying a good-sized Pedaltrain, a PP2+ and a bunch of new (to me) pedals. Cool stuff, to be sure, but I prefer gigging with only a few pedals. Plus, I'm not even gigging much lately, so I kind of assembled it for no reason. At the time it was almost all I could think about, though. Kind of like my grandson and Monster Jam.
RevMike July 10th, 2012, 10:06 PM Ooh, almost forgot. I got a Fender Telecoustic a few years back. Despite attempts at a few different pro set ups, it still was never good for more than shooting arrows.
rlyacht July 10th, 2012, 10:15 PM How about a stupid "non-purchase"?
In 1963 I had a chance to get a 1959 Les Paul Standard for $100. I was saving for the new Fender Mustang, so I held off.
That is pretty bad!. However, in the 70's I traded a nice pre-CBS tele for a Binson Echorec. Then I traded the Echorec for something else (forgot). Ironically, now the Echorec would be a very valuable piece of vintage gear (they've gone fof $2500 on ebay!)
suthol July 10th, 2012, 10:16 PM Electro Harmonix " Frequency Analyser " back in about 1976.
Cost heaps and only ever used it in one song Solitary Man left the band shortly afterwards and never used it or played the song again.
Should have just figured out a double stop solo for the harmony part I wanted.
ReaL Madras July 10th, 2012, 11:54 PM When I was in Kuwait guitars were a little difficult to acquire and the choice was limited, anyway I decided to buy an Ibanez SA36FM, now this isn't a bad guitar but I got it home and stared at it and I just couldn't get it out of my head that this looked like a spandex clad, curly perm, crotch rock 80's guitar.....I never played it and gave it to a son of a friend that I was desperate to get an electric guitar but his parents wouldn't buy one. It felt nice giving it away but it must have been one of the stupidest buys ever. I think that I paid 170 KD as guitars are more expensive there and gave it away for free.
jglenn July 11th, 2012, 12:14 AM Digitech Distortion Factory, each setting on the knob sounding more like geese farts.
beep.click July 11th, 2012, 12:40 AM Crate Power Block amp....yuck.
My friend has one in his studio and uses it almost exclusively. Somehow, he is able to make it sound good!
Many things I have bought, I go through long periods wondering what I was thinking. But eventually, I find some musically useful sound in everything. Even that horrible Digitech digital rackmount FX box I bought in the 80s -- hated that thing, but danged if it doesn't do some interesting stuff, if you use it on ITS terms!
garytelecastor July 11th, 2012, 12:56 AM An Arctec tremolo pedal. POS. It's in my junk box somewhere, and I have never used the thing.
Sometimes I think I may have an impulse control problem.
teleswisster July 11th, 2012, 03:11 AM How about a stupid "non-purchase"?
In 1963 I had a chance to get a 1959 Les Paul Standard for $100. I was saving for the new Fender Mustang, so I held off.
D'oh!
Le Jab July 11th, 2012, 04:57 AM Gretsch White Falcon. The high class hooker of guitars. Looks to die for, promises the earth, but distinctly underwhelming. Fancy clothes, but no underwear.
InfiniteRhino July 11th, 2012, 05:42 AM How about a stupid "non-purchase"?

Seasicksailor July 11th, 2012, 06:24 AM You're the guy that passed up on signing The Beatles, aren't you?
Warm Gums July 11th, 2012, 07:56 AM " I was saving for a Mustang..."
Not your fault, the Bikini babe in the Fender catalog distracted you, could happen to anyone...
O- Fender July 11th, 2012, 09:45 AM Mostly parts:
A 'd' tuner. Payed too much for it and I later realized it doesn't take much to tune from 'e' down to 'd'.
One of those "Black Ice" distortion bits that are advertised on StewMac. Bought one and while it was being shipped, I came across an article online that tells how to d.i.y. one from a couple of diodes. I would prefer to make one myself.
A 'bottle cap' piezo. It was kind of cool for a bit but I don't need one. Again, I would rather d.i.y. one.
An archtop bridge. I want to build an archtop one day but I didn't need to buy one five years ago. With my skill level and progress, I might be able to use it in another 5 years.
All these parts and more are in a box in my shop.
sneakyjapan July 11th, 2012, 09:54 AM Stupid guitar gear purchase? Moi? NEXT THREAD!
nadnitram July 15th, 2012, 12:15 AM About a year agom I traded an Affinity Telecaster for an Epiphone Explorer Beast. Dumb! I wanted to try something with humbuckers, but I'm fat and 40+, and have no interest in metal. Luckily, I was able to re-trade it for a Squier Tele Custom, so it all worked out in the end.
About three weeks ago, I picked up a Danelectro Baritone on CL. As it turns out, a guy with short fingers and a 30" scale are not a good match. Who'd a thunk it? Time to put it back on CL for another trade.
scrimmer July 15th, 2012, 02:10 PM For some ungodly reason years ago, I bought a Rocktron 'Tsunami' Chorus pedal sight unseen off eBay that sounded like the worst '80s chorusing effect you ever heard in your life! Hated that thing from the first moment I hit the footswitch. Never could get a decent sound out of it with my gear to save my life. Gave it to my nephew who thought it was great. I still cringe though whenever I'm at my sister-in-law's house and I hear him play through it. Simply awful IMHO.
I also bought a slightly used, but decent looking Republic 'Miniolian' Resonator guitar one time off of CL for a pretty cheap $80! Of course, I didn't notice until I got it home (and the seller never revealed - not HIS fault - MINE) that it needed the cone reattached to the top to be really playable. After spending another $220 on a repair to the cone/top, I decided it just didn't have the sound I was looking for and it's still laying around here somewhere unplayed and can't find a buyer for it any time that I've tried. Dumb!
keeffan July 15th, 2012, 02:16 PM In college after someone broke into my dorm and smashed my Peavey Ecoustic guitar, I traded my 1st production year Gibby Nighthawk AND my Classic 30 for a piece of ***** Ovation. If I could just go back 17 years...
JayFreddy July 15th, 2012, 02:30 PM In 1983 I bought a Jackson Randy Rhoads... Looked meaner than Darth Vader's personal Imperial Tai Fighter, but what an absolute POS...
Sometime in the late 80's I traded a 1980 Gibson Custom Shop ES335 for a Tascam PortaOne and an SM57. At the time, the trade-in value of the guitar was comparable to the retail value of the 4-track and mic, but looking back, I still feel like a dumbass.
OrangeAgent27 July 15th, 2012, 02:36 PM Bought a Floyd Rose Strat, not just not having any idea what it was, but thinking it meant it was a hard tail. You....could imagine my disappointment. Luckily I was able to sell it for the money I paid for it. Phew, talk about sick to your stomach!
chrom-freak July 15th, 2012, 08:13 PM Impulse buy of an ibanez rg 7-string.
Was almost a steal used but the only useful thing i ended up using it for was playing country stuff where the bass went down to the low b. Well about a year later i sold it for a profit even though there was a huge chip in the paint on the upper bout that the strap button of my tele left.
I put the money towards a used gibby lp studio. A keeper that i love to death!
1955 July 15th, 2012, 08:21 PM I'd say music in general has been a pretty ridiculous purchase. But I am an unreasonable spirit, without a close shave, health insurance, or feelings, and lately I've been doing A LOT of vacuuming.
armycopter July 16th, 2012, 09:08 AM I got back into playing a couple years ago and decided I needed a tube amp.
I had a similiar experience. Bought the HT-5R after tons of research. Played it for about 3 days and sent it back... I got my $$ back minus the 15% restock fee. Just couldn't bond with it.
fatcat July 16th, 2012, 10:11 AM luckily, I haven't had one yet... I have found some use for all of my gear. I don't have a lot of gear compared to a many here on the forum.
I will say that I am rediscovering my first distortion pedal again; an EH Metal Muff. I had some remorse over it, until I plugged it in recently, and played with it a bit. If you turn the distortion down all the way, it has a cool, fuzzy, overdrive tone that I was looking for to play slide. And it cleans up with the volume knob. Who would have thought?
My buyer's remorse primarily comes from using a credit card for purchases.
P.S. 1955,
love that line: "But I am an unreasonable spirit, without a close shave, health insurance, or feelings, and lately I've been doing A LOT of vacuuming."
AirBagTester July 16th, 2012, 10:27 AM Bought a third ukulele :(
(It was a really bad cheap one. I think I'm going to stick pictures all over it and gift it to someone.)
dog fart July 16th, 2012, 10:36 AM Ok I mentioned this on a seperate thread but I'll repeat it. I had a SG Standard from the mid/late '90s. I had replaced the pickups with a set of Pearly Gates. I went to the store to find some pickups to replace the replacements with and there it was. A just released Am Std Tele in ash, the sales guy was just hanging it on the wall. GAS took over and the SG, 4 pickups and the cash in my pockets stayed behind and the Tele left with me. I never bonded with the Tele and a couple of months later it was gone and good ridance. I still miss that SG, I'm still searching for the one who may never be. I'm still kicking myself too.
Arbiter July 16th, 2012, 10:58 AM Fender Champion 600. I've had it now for about six months. It's missing something tonally that I cannot quite define, and it has that little tiny hum from the heater wires that WILL NOT GO AWAY no matter what I've tried. I can live with the tonal issues but not with the hum. It drives me crazy. For a toy practice amp it's OK, I guess, and I'll probably end up putting it in my work office so it won't go totally to waste, but I frankly really regret this one.
huckdeuceman July 16th, 2012, 11:08 AM FX 25B ENVELOPE FILTER!, and I play mostly country and southern rock!...lol, no Disco for me, or funk!..but it is a purdy green metalic color...haha!

Tone Master July 16th, 2012, 12:04 PM The Boss Acoustic Simulator AC-3. I thought I could use it with my Telecaster with the band and not have to carry one of my acoustic guitars along. Boy was I wrong, it does not even come close to an acoustic sounding guitar... Maybe it is not ment to use a Telecaster with it..
You would be surprised to know that it's made for humbuckers, especially high-output ones. Boss made it for metal players that want acoustic and tinny distortion in one song up on stage. Or so they say. I've never tried it.
JRush July 16th, 2012, 12:15 PM After several years of not playing I got recruited to join a group at church. I wanted a Strat-type guitar and found one of these cheap:
http://guitaradar.com/Jackson%20Surfcaster.jpg
There was no way it could have been cheap enough - eBay'ed it for a small loss (which was money well chalked up to experience). I found a great N7 Roadhouse Strat a month later.
mohair_chair July 16th, 2012, 12:36 PM I bought an American Deluxe Telecaster last year. I wanted a really nice Tele, and when I came into some money, I sprang for it. I loved it at first, but after a month or so, I realized I had fallen out of love with it. I can't say I hate it, but I certainly don't love it, and I don't play it that much. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it. It's still pristine, and I'd love to trade it for something else. I spent a lot of money on a guitar I rarely play, so that qualifies for a stupid purchase.
MahoganyMan11 July 16th, 2012, 12:48 PM A distortion pedal by boss.
FenderNashville July 16th, 2012, 01:00 PM A couple purchases that were not ideal for me:
(1) Buying a Dean Maple Exotica acoustic back in the day all because it looked cool. Lasted a whole two weeks before I sold it after realizing it sounds crappy.
(2) Buying a Vox AD15VT before settling on the Fender Vibro Champ XT. The Fender Hybrid creams the Vox hybrid in every respect.
(3) Using D'Addario EXP strings. I bought into the hype that "they last just as long as Elixirs and sound better." Well, no, they don't. They have maybe 60% the lifespan of Elixirs, and they sound worse quickly. Poor value and sound.
pavlovsdog July 16th, 2012, 01:19 PM MXR Blue Box
Abu Twangy July 16th, 2012, 01:24 PM I once owned a Fender Telecoustic! Tele shape, lousy acoustic sound, worst piezo pickup ever
I actually used it to audition for a 19 piece jazz band so I wouldn't have to pull out my red pointy '87 Washburn G series shredder guitar. Somehow I got the job.
fatboymjt July 16th, 2012, 01:53 PM years ago I bought a old Nady wireless unit...from Duane Steeles band Rock N Horse's guitar player Dave Milner?...next night all plugged in...the middle of my first hot solo...breaks through loud and clear...CAB NUMBER 7... TO THE OLD HOTEL PLEASE!...CAB 7... OLD HOTEL!...LOL..hope youre well and pickin buddy...I still listen to the HIGHWAYS album...and still love your TELE pickin on it....

Hoodster July 16th, 2012, 07:28 PM craigslist impulse Faded V .......47 years old and I bought a V in a parking lot. It slid off my knee. It was silly (for me). Sold this that baby on craigslsit. Full circle.......

Best post so far.
"47 years old and I bought a V in a parking lot."
Something I'd be tempted to do, and I've got a couple years on you.
Hoodster July 16th, 2012, 07:35 PM Mine was probably a Crate V33 head (for home use!) when they blew them out a few years back.
Fortunately I awoke to my stupidity by the time it arrived, so I was able to refuse delivery.
banjohabit July 16th, 2012, 10:26 PM fender frontman 25r. a boat anchor from the start, except it's really not heavy enough to do that job well either. blah !
backalleyblues July 16th, 2012, 11:00 PM Dano Wasabi Chorus-Tremolo pedal... could NEVER get that thing to stay in one setting, and it ate batteries like Roseanne Barr eats bacon...
Yamaha Series I amps from the 70s-I bought TWO of them-such crappy little amps... I'd buy another, just to load it up with fireworks and watch the show...
Early 70's SG II-a waste of wood and wire, just really did not sound good at all. At least I got my money back on that one...

x2plex July 16th, 2012, 11:35 PM Gibson Ripper Bass. 1976 was a rough year for many products and this was no exception. Muddy sound, unstable neck, crappy bridge and a truss that broke itself within two years. There's a reason why these monsters have no collector value.
For my money, I coulda had a Jazz or P-bass that would be aging like fine wine! :-(

JamesL July 17th, 2012, 12:12 AM the first guitar, that led to thousands of dollars of more over the years......JUST KIDDING.
but in all honesty my most embarrassing is probably my first one, an acoustic electric ibanez talman. really not the best guitar at all...
Other people hate the Talman.....I like mine.....
puke hat roy July 22nd, 2012, 04:15 PM I travel a lot on my job and stay in motels/hotels. I take a MIM standard strat with me. Obviously can't take one of my amps, so bought an Orange Micro Crush. It sounded decent at the store using one of their cheapo guitars. Took it on the road and it is a real piece of junk. You can't use the overdrive button unless volume is nearly off. Big mistake on this one. Then I bought a Vox headphone amp. It was just O.K. The on/off switch broke off the 6 th time I used it. I think I'll just read a book when I learn how.
Deeve July 22nd, 2012, 11:27 PM Like many of you, I've made regrettable pedal purchases, the dumbest ones being the extra floor-control for the POD (which I still like and still use) and some darn multi effect thing from ART (what was I thinking?)
but the *most* unfortunate purchase would have to be that Korg digital multi tracker I *still* cannot understand how to use.
I'm pretty happy w/ the Norlin-era LP Custom, the cruelly hacked PV hybrid twin and my craigslist sortacasters.
Keep this thread going.
Peace - Deeve
netspirit July 23rd, 2012, 01:54 AM Bought an Ernie Ball volume pedal. Real nice one, too! Used it zero times.
mndean July 23rd, 2012, 08:54 PM Like many of you, I've made regrettable pedal purchases some darn multi effect thing from ART (what was I thinking?)
Peace - Deeve
Don't feel bad, I bought a rackmount multi effects thing from ART, and I started to hate it within a week. I thought I'd get some sounds I could use, but no, not a one I could stand. Worst gear purchase I can remember. The other bad purchases I could flip, but nobody wanted the effects box, so I just gave it away.
paratus July 24th, 2012, 08:31 PM I made the mistake of buying a used rack mount POD. What was I thinking? It has 41256 different sounds, and not one of them is worth a darn.
adamkavanagh July 24th, 2012, 09:49 PM http://www.derringers.com.au/product_images/s/725/NanoMuffOverdrive__90662_zoom.jpg
It requires separate power. No control. It's useless save for a very aggressive lead fuzz tone and I'm not into that junk.
