A matched pair of Washburn Bantam headless basses.

This is what happens when you spend all your time in smokey bars, kids...

Ok, well, the rest of the story - the one of the left has seen steady use for 30 years or so, and the one on the right has not, though it was actually "treated" to a complete refinish some years back. I picked it up off eBay because I just couldn't resist, and my bud has always "fretted" over what he would do if his ever broke. (Never mind the knobs fell off years ago and he never replaced them, and the one volume pot is frozen, so "broke" for him is not the same as everyone else.)

With the little ampeg stack, that has got to be one of the most compact rigs going. I would like to get my hands on a full blown steinberger. I have never played one. How does the washburn compare?

That stack is not for gigging, but just in the basement. But, what he actually uses is probably smaller: it's a preamp - don't ask me what brand/model - and a 12" Mackie full-range powered PA speaker. He can go direct to the PA if required, of course. Seems like we're all downsizing at our age, so smaller, lighter is always better.

Can't give you a comparison - I've admit to having owned basses, but I'm not a bass player! This kind of bass never really caught on, but some folks swear by them. It's a decent middle length scale, 32" IIRC, so though it looks small, it has a good bottom. Probably doesn't work for every genre, but for packability, especially flying (except it looks like you are carrying a rifle case), it's great. (Good luck finding a guitar stand for it though!)
