This is an Oscar Schmidt Mandolin. The taterbug is a derogatory term implying these roundback mandolins looked like Colorado Potato Beetles or Cucumber Beetles. In any case it's very old and in poor condition.
Can anyone even make out the date? I saw another guitar maybe on this forum or another displaying his and on the top of the headstock it had the date 1898. Looks just like mine. I look at the numbers and it only appears there are 3. It also appears as if it was sloppy labeling. My best guess is 1911. I've tried fooling around with photoshop to no avail. Anyone make out the number?
I know these were mass produced so that might explain some things. One thing i wonder about is can a cracked top be repaired? It not only has a nice big crack but has a severe bracing problem, cracked ebony fretboard(I'm assuming ebony for all I know a bunch of carpenter ants started eating it and threw up). The back is okay and is Brazilian Rosewood.
I imagine someone could replace the top, salvage the pickguard, duplicate the inlays and maybe even repair/fill/replace fretboard. Then again this person who is not going to be me better really love projects!
I really have no idea but suspect some people love this sort of work/hobby. I however am selling it(eventually since I'm still cleaning the dirt off it)either as a fixer upper or as wall art. Shame what someone did to this though.
