Will a pickup work without pole pieces?

So, I bought a pickup to use in my Tele that has me a bit confused. I won't mention the seller yet until I know if it is supposed to be this way, and if not, give the seller a chance to fix it.

It is a humbucker that is made to resemble a Fender wide range but Gibson humbucker sized. My MIM Tele came stock with a regular sized humbucker and I think this will give it a more classic Fender look. Also the stock 'bucker is a bit thin and this is supposed to be a bit more full-bodied sounding pickup.

But back to the issue at hand...
It only has pole screws in the halves of the coils where the screws go through the metal cover. The other six holes are completely empty.

Isn't this going to result in each coil only working properly for three strings?

My Tele is wired to split the coils using a 5-way switch. If I split the coils on this pickup, won't the one coil only work properly on three strings?

That is correct, it won't work properly with the coils split. What he should have done is put the other pole peices in and counter sunk them into the bobbin before putting the cover on. That way you get the asthetics and the functionality.

Well, the answer is that the pickup is indeed designed that way. So, it's going back to be exchanged for one that works in my application.
