Tele Custom Pickguard

So I'm building a tele custom for a friend. He ordered some parts and had them shipped to me. One of which was a tele custom pickguard. As I do a dry fit I notice these little dots on the pickguard near the pot holes. I thought maybe I dinged it moving it around, but then notice they're all the same distance relative to the hole. I searched some pictures of pickguards and most didn't have this, but I found one that did.

Anyone have any insight? Is it supposed to be a dial marker? How come few of them have this?

Thanks!

Here's a progress shot from my phone.

I'd say those are markers which are the equivalent of the pointers found on some Gibson guitars during the 60's and 70's. You could use some brass brads with most of the wire clipped off I bet. They were probably a feature on the originals and not the reissues.
