Drop-In Locking Machine Heads?

My 1st post here. I'm 47, male, married, play guitar and bass, live in SE Texas.

I have two USA Tele's. A 90's and a 2002. I want to install locking tuners. I ordered the Schallers from Stew Mac but they were wrong and I returned them. I've emailed Schaller for a model # and they haven't responded. I do not want the Fender/Ping (Korean) machines. I want high quality machines.

The problem is there are two anti-rotation holes for each tuner. The Schallers I've seen have just one ant-rotation pin. I'd have to drill a new hole between the two existing holes for each tuner...and it looks like the original two holes would be visable.

What locking tuners are "drop-in"?

Thanks,
Joey

I think (but I'm not 100% sure) that you need the "Fender Schallers" as opposed to the regular Schallers that StewMac sells. These are the ones that are fitted to the USA Deluxe guitars.

Darren Riley has them here (http://www.darrenriley.com/shop/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=929). Give Darren a call - (919)877 0841 - and ask if these are 2-pin models.

But....I'd still question why you'd want locking tuners on a non-tremelo guitar.

Even on a non-vibrato guitar, locking tuners have some advantages. They stay in tune better, much quicker to replace a broken string during a gig, I like the balance the extra weight gives me.

They may make it (a tiny bit) easier to change strings. They stay in tune no better at all. I don't need any extra weight on the headstocks of my Teles.

YMMV

I have to admit that I do like the ease and quickness of string changes with locking tuners, but that's where the advantages end. The only time they stay in tune better than standard tuners on a non-trem guitar is if your winding technique is poor.

A "Heads-up" on the locking tuners issue.

The locking tuners with the "F" on the back are Ping tuners, the Fender Schallers do not have an "F" on the back.

There was a debate on another forum on which tuner was made by Ping or Schaller, I emailed Fender and that's the answer I got back.

That's exactly what I'm finding out. Where do I buy the 2pin German Schallers?

Right here. (http://www.amazon.com/Fender-Schaller-Locking-Tuners/dp/B002NM05XU/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1341506305&sr=8-3&keywords=locking+schaller+tuners)

Note that they're actually supplied by Music123; you could get them from there directly.

Thanks, Andy. I found those too but they're brushed finish. All the hardware on my Tele's are chrome.

Well, shoot. Maybe you could polish 'em?

Here are some more:

http://www.guitarpartsresource.com/tuners_schallerlocking.htm

I have schaller locking tuners on my '95 MIA stratplus, '95 MIA tele, my partscaster tele with B5 Bigsby, and my LP-type with B7 bigsby. I like them for all the reasons the listed: easy string change, tuning stability, head mass.
