You're right. Didn't think of that one.

You can't click the individual effects on and off with the Stain as though it were three or four pedals. I still think the Tattoo is something new/special.

You are correct. The Tattoo is not their first Multi.

Ya, I've got a holy stain and love it, but consider it more of a super flexible stomp box then an actual multieffect.

Even though I wouldn't use over 90% of what EHX makes, I really respect all the things they offer.

The number of different pedals is absolutely nutty. Many companies that try that end up getting in over their heads. Not EHX.

I have no need for multi fx, but I can see the appeal for the new EHX box right away, and I think it's cool.

I bet it will sell like hotcakes. For a lot of guitarists it will be all the FX they need, in a heavy duty, gigworthy box. I even think there will be more of these "3 in 1" type FX around the bend.

I'm sold. !! It's looks great! I can just grab one pedal for practice, guitar and I'm all set!! No need for extra pedal or even board. I LOVE EHX.

Love my Holy Stain just for the reverbs alone - this new one (is it Tone Tattoo?) looks like 80s-era George Lynch in a box. Might keep a look out for one as these on eBay as these types of toys are great for the studio!

You know what would be kind of cool?

Having the ability to change the order of which is running into which. Like the Wilson Stoned Grasshopper.
I like chorus before gain sometimes, it'd be cool to have that on the fly.

Interesting collection or choices in that box. Not crazy with the Ed Hardy/Affliction/Middle Aged Douchebag artwork on the box though but I like the idea. Now if they could do some other combo pedals that include different effects!

A great idea especially for your kids first stomp box. It does take away from playing around with the order. I used to own the holy stain but couldn't get along with it really. It did a couple of things I liked but none of them well enough. Also found it hard to get a straight clean signal through it, there was always some minor clipping sound..

Well considering the cost and build quality of Carl Martin pedals I think that the Quatro is a steal at $685. I wish they would have kept the "tremelo" that was in the original one. I also like the fact it has a EFX loop built in so you can use your favorite distortion/fuzz pedal. All analog too

You know I have never seen a Quatro in the used section of any guitar store I have been to.

Not at that price point. Plus the Wilson is a boost, an OD, and a fuzz. As soon as you bring a delay based effect to the party then that would take some work. Of course you could always get the Mad Professor Golden Cello.

It's too bad there doesn't appear to be a global bypass switch. Although I didn't exactly hear EJ in the Golden Cello demo, I really liked the idea of being able to get your echo-laden distortion sound with one stomp. I think they missed an opportunity with this one.

EHX = noise/hiss

EHX w/ 3 effects = 3X as much noise/hiss ?

I really respect them as a company (made in America, a ridiculous amount of pedals) but sometimes they make things that are just more curiosities than usable pedals.

I dont think the Holy Stain is entirely Analog, whereas this one looks like it is.

That Tattoo is a little too 'Metal' all round for my tastes, and I wonder is it likely outside the price range of those who would like the look, and the intended sound of it.

I like the concept though!

yeah, I like EHX. . .I think they are the most fun and most innovated company out there and they offer quality at often low prices. . .the one thing I wish they'd do is upgrade their pedals, so that when there is a flaw or as technology advances, there is version 1.2 or 2.3 etc. Some of their pedals are perfect, but some need to evolve with the times..

The effects are all analog. At that stupid low street price, one shouldn't hesitate getting it modded to change the effects order. It's just adding a few switches.

Even if the circuitboard is SMT construction (assuming it is, cramming all that into one box), re-routing the switching would be one of the easier things to do. It could be as simple as pulling the stock footswitches off, running wires to your "order" switches, and then back to the footswitches.

As far as the "jersey shore" appearance thing goes - look closely at the pic. This EHX pedal has a big decal on the top of a bare metal box. Just remove the decal. If it is that cool of an analog multi at a bargain of a price, I wouldn't hesitate on doing that, either.

But the order switching thing being added? Easy.

I must state, I have nothing but massive love and admiration for EHX. As a LONG time player, their brand has always stood out for me as a beacon of all things good. Ever since I was a dirt poor kid, EHX has made really cool, innovative products which I could actually AFFORD. And to this day, I get a warm, cozy feeling whenever I simply read their name. On top of all that, they show no signs of slowing down. It's as if Mike Matthews documented ideal of 'beating death' is destined to be manifested in the ongoing progeny of EHX. I think that's a safe bet!

Oops, also... I'm absolutely sure that with a little tinkering around, I (and probably anyone else) could find many useful sounds in the Tone Tattoo. It's just not something I'm willing to pay for. Har har! :)

I should add, I wish they'd come up with an alternate version for more retro, non-metal players like me. An original Big Muff, plus a Small Stone, plus analog echo would freakin' ROCK! :-)

This is exactly what I was thinking. I don't have any EHX effects, but if they came up with a combination that appealed a little more to me I'd probably give this a try. I sure like the concept of three/four things (or actually things I would use) in a box.

You should send them an email.

I think that Matthews gears things more towards the younger-ish crowd (which I suppose is evidenced by the Jersey Shore-ish looking graphics on this new pedal).

He probably has an idea that for those of us who like the trad EHX stuff that we will probably seek out older EHX pedals. For that reason, he may be concentrating on a younger crowd - probably one that has never played a 30 year old Big Muff, or would want more distortion for stoner/doom music.

I also recall quite a bit of lost love for some of the older EHX stuff like the V1 Hot Tubes, the Screaming Bird, etc. - the younger crowd again seems to go for that stuff. Heck, the "new" Hot Tubes actually now uses tubes!

And with the exception of reverb, much of the trad crowd may not be into all of the digital EHX pedals like the POG or HOG, or the ones that give you synthesized non-guitar'ish sounds. Again, that's kinda the non-rock'ish crowd of users.

I'm not trying to say that effects that make any type of sound have more or less validity, just more that EHX has made a choice to move away from the traditional end a bit. Why else put a tone stack bypass and "wicker" on the entry level Muff?

I also think it's more direct competition between EHX and Vex with the off the beaten path pedals. They both come up with combos that I don't think many other manufacturers even think of.

EHX could probably just make a good RI of all the popular Muffs, the Small Stone, and the DMM and make a sizable fortune. And yet they don't. Matthews has been around long enough to have the marketing research down, so us trad types will probably have to "beg" with emails.

Lotsa guesses on my part, but judging from EHX's behavior and decisions, it seems to make sense to me.

mal paso
July 9th, 2012, 01:32 PM
Well, for just guesses, I'd reckon they're pretty good ones!

My thing with this particular pedal though, is that EHX has pretty much always been far out FXwise, but the pedals themselves have been pretty classy looking. Even their most recent entries have been pretty cool looking. The Freeze, the Ring Thing, the Ravish, etc.

This is far out, yet ugly.

So, in a sense, they've more or less always catered to an experimental crowd, but this just reeks of desperation to me. I don't want to spend 200 bones:lol: on a pedal I have to deface in order to not be embarrassed by it's inclusion on my board.

I mean, is this really just directed towards neon green pointy Ibanez ax-wielders? Cuz that's what it seems like to me. Even the Metal Muff wasn't this egregious!

It's just a decal that's holding you back? It's not like you would have to gouge at silkscreening with a chisel or something.

A heat gun (or maybe just a hair dryer) will zap that sticker right off. Thanks to modern mass produced pedal production (even if it is "assembled" in NY), you could have that thing out of the box in just minutes.

Just whack it with some heat, get the decal off, slap the internals back in, and no embarrassment, and not what I would call a defacing job.

If you really don't want it looking plain, have some kid do you some appropriate graphics on inkjet decal paper. Topcoat it with some clear gloss spray, and slap that snazzy thing on there.

Here's a Rat scratchbuild that I did with inkjet paper. The hardest part was getting the lettering to line up with the holes. Yeah, it's a little creepy, but the point is YOU can make these things look how you want, with just a little effort.
