chrom-freak July 4th, 2012, 07:43 AM Hey guys.
Just got to play a Gretsch Electromatic 5120 ( the cheaper korean one).
Man that is one sweet guitar. Just couldn't put that baby down. Played it for almost an hour in the store. GAS!! But i need another guitar like a hole in the head. Got 9 guits in a small apartment. I feel this is the one but i need to resiiist. Help me!
DesmoDog July 4th, 2012, 08:09 AM The 5120 is being replaced so it was probably marked down? The 5420 that's replacing it has different pickups, neck inlays, and bound f-holes plus a few other things I'm likely forgetting. Oh yeah, the 5420 comes in different colors too.
So no, you don't want a 5120. You want a 5420.
Happy to help.
(PS I bought a 5122 about a year ago. It's being replaced by the 5422 but I have no plans of changing)

I'm not too keen on overly fancy guitars, so thanks for making my GAS even worse.

If it were that easy.

I just bought a 5120 from hellomusic.com, came out to $465 shipped after $100 off coupon. Pretty pleased with that deal - most folks think they are great guitars at $700.
So I'm trying to ignore the 5420 for now. I know the stock pups on the 5120 aren't that highly regarded (gee, when you compare them to $250 a set TV Jones - more than half the price I'm paying for the whole instrument, it's no wonder) but I suspect futzing with the height and pole pieces will probably help a lot.
I think a fair number of players don't bother tinkering much - they just plug her in, maybe feel disappointed it doesn't sound exactly like a $2500 Gretsch, and immediately order new pups, which IMO should be an almost last resort. But then again, I'm not fanatical about the nailing the gretsch sound either - close is fine for me at that price.
Stoked to get this guitar and check it out for myself!
JDRNoPro July 5th, 2012, 06:45 PM Lots of good deals on used 5120's if one is patient. About $100 or so gets a set of High Sensitivity Filtertrons (Same as in many ProLine Getsches). That's what I did and it's a great sounding and playing guitar.
Revv23 July 5th, 2012, 07:45 PM Wish i could get a lefty for anywhere near that price;(

I had one in my cart and put the July100 coupon code in and it took it at that price. I didn't check out right then because I didn't have the time to go through the process. When I tried it again 30 minutes later, it wouldn't take the coupon even though they still had some. Oh well. I ended up getting one for $519.00 shipped. Still a good price. And I'm getting it from a trusted vendor. I've been a little leery about using Hello Music for some reason.
