Im new to this forum but, have been trying to research as much as i could about the topic and have found mixed answers. Ive seen it say Never cover enamel with lacquer, and i also have see people say they have no problem as long as they wait a week or so after putting the color on, and slowly misting coats of lacquer over the enamel, most people using deft.

1. I wouldn't recommend mixing and matching finishing types, especially lacquer and enamel.
2. I wouldn't recommend DEFT for a guitar finish.

You can make krylon and lacquer work, but its more trouble than its worth in my opinion. Especially when you can go down to your favorite auto supply store and buy Duplicolor, which is an acrylic lacquer. That would be compatible with your common clear lacquers like minwax. Plus, you will get good coat adhesion sticking with lacquer.

What Colt has written is all too true from my personal experience. In fact I had a recent experience with MinWax lacquer wrinkling a Re-ranch color on its third application but it came from a new can so sometimes the quality control on loads can be off. So to reduce the margin of error I would suggest staying within the same manufacture's produce line but as an absolute rule NEVER mix enamels and lacquers together.

As a side note on Duplicolor; I used their Acrylic Clear over one of their colors with FANTASTIC RESULTS!!! I was able to get a great glossy protective finish with one coat (far thinner than nitro) and rub out the finish with only 600 grit then buff and polish in 48 hours. After a week the finish was cure completely. I don't think I'll be using nitro again

I have recently started using some of Duplicolors products I can spray through my spray rig, and I have been very impressed.

Done this many times with no problems, three mist coats then spray as normal. Watco or Minwax are much better than Deft for guitars.

You can apply urethane or enamel on top of cured lacquer , but not the other way around.
Urethane and enamel won't penetrate lacquer, but lacquer will penetrate either.
Lacquer over urethane or enamel will cause it to wrinkle, urethane over lacquer will not wrinkle.

I think I might try this. Do you remember the name on the Duplicolor can for the acrylic clear? Local store has the Duplicolor "Crystal Clear" or "High Performance Clear" I don't know if there is a difference or not. And what colors have you used, if you don't mind me asking? Thanks.

I have used Reranch lacquer with Reranch clear, Minwax clear and Deft clear and haven't noticed any real differences to speak of. My latest which is still curing is Duplicolor Flash Red rattle can with Deft satin clear. This too has been fine so I guess it may have to do with humidity, temperature etc. as to why some have issues. I live in the SF bay area with relatively low humidity and highs in the mid eighties most days this time of the year. I really like the way Duplicolor acrylic lacquer covers compared to Reranch nitro, although it doesn't seem to melt into the previous coat quite as well. On the other hand it seems you can spray closer and put on a wetter coat without runs compared to the Reranch nitro stuff.

Its Duplicolor Protective Clear coat Finish. It comes in this can that looks like this:

I've used their Arctic White and a color they call Sunburst Gold Met.that looks really close to Gibson's Gold top gold for their non historical Les Pauls or Fender's Shoreline Gold

Just an update, I waited about 4days and then sprayed the minwax over the new krylon very lightly a few times and even brushed some on in areas to check for reaction And there was none. Just finished spraying the whole bottle on and don't have any problems over the enamel, it worked out great

Sounds cool, post some pictures when you get a chance.

Well, thanks, guys. Needed a good color lacquer suggestion with a better color palette than ReRanch and the Duplicolor is working great. Taking my Valspar nitro like a champ, no issues whatsoever.

Mist on the first few coat and you can spray nitro over almost anything.

Took out the pickup and put the stock one back in. Quick paint job with some small dirt specs in it but for the most part you can't tell unless up close. Having some trouble with polishing tho, gotta look for a good forum here to help
