i know i'm going to get flamed for this, but...

Here:
Toxic Woods" by Brian Woods and C. D. Calnan, British
- Journal of Dermatology, Vol. 95, Supplement 13, 1976

It says that ebony "commonly" produces allergic reactions when handled. But, it also says the same thing of rosewood (though this isn't supposed to happen as often, like 2 % - 5 %). Has anyone, at any time ever, heard of anyone getting skin irritation from an ebony fretboard?

I sort of doubt it but hey, Woods and Calnan seem to think so...

there are LOTS of wood genus that trigger allergic skin and respiratory actions in humans. for the extreme most part, it occurs when working on the raw wood (sanding, scraping, filing, touching, inhaling, etc). once the fretboard is leveled and smooth, then fretted, then cleaned with naphtha and oiled, it would be the rare human that will have an allergic reaction. caution is required when woodworking, but for other cricumstances i think some people are over reacting.

Also, it's usually soft skin that reacts - not the thick skin of your hands.
