Does not look like standard gold metal flake. Otherwise it would be more even and smooth due to fine particles, or more glittery due to larger flake. It almost looks like gold leaf paint base with a metal flake clear coat to me.

I'm at a loss as to the darkish discoloration over the finish though, unless oxidation gave it "teeth" for dirt and grime to get worked into the clear coat.

My 0.02.

I'd agree, that does look suspiciously like some sort of coarsely applied leaf/foil. Using a spray glue, or contact cement instead of glue size often results in fine blistering of applied leaf (kind of a reverse golf ball texture.)

But it could also be a flake that was partially melted by the topcoat. The topcoat looks fairly thick, and maybe a poly.

Just a guess though, one photo is hardly definitive.

Any more info on who did this or where it came from?

No - it's a Danocaster, and that's the only pic I found of it. I'll look and see what I can find, but so far, no dice.

Well, first you get your teeth whitened, then you buy some hair products, and start using a stairmaster down at the gym until those buns are super firm. Next some spray tan, switch to diet Coke, and get a manicure.

Once you've mastered all those things, doing a finish like that is going to be second nature - and simply fabulous.

That must be some of that dry humor you brits are ever so famous for.

I don't think folks are foolish enough to do that sort of thing in Et-lannuh.

Looks like old school metal flake that had very little top coat if any.
Metal flake requires a huge amount of clear, because the flake will not lay down flat, it lays on edge, on top of other flakes and so forth to make a very rough surface, that't why you need tons of clear to cover it and build a layer over the top of the flake.
The picture looks like someone shot the metal flake, but didn't clear over it enough to cover the flake.

Definitely not. Gold leaf comes in sheets, and you just lay it on the intended surface, you can actually see the sheets overlapping each other and also show contrasting shades of the leafs.

OH yeah.. The Liberace Caster

It's huge flakes - like Bass Boat HUGE - in fact, they were pretty hard to even spray. I had to switch to a different gun !!

the undercoat is a light grey ( which I saw on a similar strat in the Japanese book :" Galaxy of Strats " )

and then there's a TON of clear on it. I typically use only 4 clear coats - this had about 8. But it ended up smooth and completely flat

But it was a HUGE PITA and I'd swore to never do it again

and I found little gold flakes in all sorts of stuff for about 2 months after

If you are trying to recreate it and have any questions - feel free to email me

Looks like the same finish as my sparkle Tele.

It looks as though it would feel like sandpaper but is actually completely smooth. It is the same finish as they use on sparkle drumkits and is polyester with silver sparkle bits in it. The guy that did it for me (years ago) said it hat to be done in a completely dust free environment - even more so than a regular finish.

It's the same as the sparkle finish Buck Owens used to have in the 60s.
