I am building a 5E3, and have a 40 watt OT that I plan to use instead of the standard. It is a little large for the standard mounting scheme for the usual Fender-style chassis. My question is, will it be detrimental to angle it at approximately 45 degrees from the traditional mount, so as to fit better in the cabinet, or will that cause hum or other nasty things?

Hi IMHO I don't think that will be a problem the only thing moving in the OT is current.but may be the guys here could add some light in this matter.

You definitely want the coils at a right angle to one another. They each have a strong electrical field.

The right angle thing was what I was afraid of. I think I have worked out a solution though. We'll find out this weekend. Thanks for the help.

I've cocked them a little sideways to fit with no ill effect. The general orientation remains the same.
You can buy Vertical Power Transformers that mount next to vertical Output Transformers.
I never tried that set up. Seems like the wrong thing to do.
Seems important to me that the PT should have a horizontal orientation and the OT has a vertical orientation.

If one is horizontal and one is vertical, there's all the right angle you need, right?
