On a couple of my old guitars the pickguard screw holes are so loose that screws just drop in rather than grab tight.
Can I fix this anyhow without bonding to the screws at the same time?

Yes. Put in a toothpick cut to depth and wood glue (or even super glue). Wait for it to dry. Screw in screw. Done.

Wick in superglue in the hole. Swirl around with toothpick, it should give it
enough extra material for the screw to "bite" into. If not repeat with another
glue application.

Toothpick trick works well. Dribble some glue on toothpick, put in hole, allow to dry. Cut off flush, reinsert screw. Simple.

I use a dab of wood filler in each hole every time I take of the PG.
It's doesn't effect getting them out the next time.

By all means use the toothpick method but make sure they're hardwood as they're less likely to turn to pulp.
Also, they'll improve tone no end.

Ditto on the toothpick repair.
