Blacktop Baritone Fret Buzz oddity downstroke/upstroke?

Pulled the trigger on a Blacktop Baritone tele last week. First one to come in had terrible buzz on the 3rd string (D), with proper neck relief which would not go away, even raising the saddle very high. So I sent it back.

Got the new one and it has much the same problem. While fooling with it, I noticed it is almost gone during downstroke, but prominent during upstroke. Is this some sort of bridge issue? I don't care for the bridges on these blacktops, I think they are POS.

I thought the nut slot might be cut a little low, but that would only cause buzz until it was fretted, right? Only when played open?

Any ideas?
