I am amazed by Angela Gossow in Arch Enemy. Totally not my style - but she amazes me...

Just as a side note - I use Arch Enemy to blow away the neighbours when they don't turn their music down at 3am in the morning. I route it into two of my guitar amps, open the windows and they give up on their party and disperse every time

Ironically I've also used Opera.

I think of more heavier, doom laden stuff when I think of metal. The 80's did a good job of almost killing metal off, just like the 90's watered down the 'punk' label. Music labels should be killed off, just take a band for what it is, but the idea and sound of the words "Heavy Metal", like Burroughs "Heavy Metal Kids" from Naked Lunch always had more connotations of toxicity, and doom, something rough. That's the kind of Heavy metal I like. Can't stand the Hair bands, or anything that has that glam, or power ballad thing in it.

What I love about being a metal head is no matter where I go, I'll always be welcomed as being a Brother, metal has been the music for outcasts, people who found solace in a kind of music that sums up their anger about daily life in high volume, high gain levels and a lot of beer.

Metal is a lifestyle, a community a nation without actual landmarks. And it's that whole thing of being united as metal heads that people find threatening. I know I shouldn't be talking religion and politics here but metal has been on the receiving end of religious groups and Politicians alike who have been slagging the music and the fans for just existing.
E7C5kj1VRIU
What Dee Snider was representing here was the whole sense of Community that metal heads have and no politician has ever changed their point of view.

LMcDg2HwOnM
I guess we can thank Kiss for coming up with the idea that all metal fans should be a family, songs like the one I posted, "Rock N Roll all night" and "Detroit Rock City" speak of a community, united in their love of heavy metal. It's a message that many band have since carried.
_7EQlfprV9E
If you go to a metal fest wearing an Iron maiden shirt and you encounter somebody wearing an Slipknot shirt, the reaction of that other fan will be "Yeah man, I saw them at that festival, wanna beer?"

tadGYjOSa4k
And let nobody tell you that Metal bands and metal fans don't have a sense of humor, people who listened to Gorefest would just as easily sing along with "Blaas of Glory" who are a marching band which performs metal songs, they've opened for Iron Maiden, Metallica and Slipknot.

Pretty epic, causing a mosh pit in a swimming pool.

Of course not every metal band is taken seriously and none more than Manowar. Who's songs about fighting and going to war to defend metal and their leather clad image evoked ridicule for as long as the band has been around. But Manowar are in fact much like the metal fans: They find a sense of community with each other, a shared interest and the don't give a damn about what the naysayers have to say.

Well I wasn't listening to the radio in the 80s, but in the UK, Lemmy, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and others were actually defining metal, not killing it. There wasn't any subjective sub-genres of metal back then, as Lemmy et al hadn't enabled people to invent them yet.

Huge KISS fan since '76. But they are most definitely not a Metal band. They have put a toe in a time or two but the efforts just don't fit into the KISS formula. With Ace Frehley, KISS always had more of a Stones vibe than anything that might approach Metal.

As far as community and family, sure Gene and Paul believe in it - as long as that community and family is buying KISS merch!

I grew up on metal and I dig the attitude, aggressiveness and musicanship of many metal artists, but I just can't handle the cookie monster vocal stylings many of today's metal artists. Give me someone who can sing. I'm not sure if I would classify Tool as a metal band, but they're far and away my favorite "heavy" band. They have some awesome skull-crushers like this one.

Metal was the first music I got into at 13, and it wasn't til I started using forums that I saw people were dividing it into pointless sub-genres. No other genre of music does this.

'Course R&B is a catch-all for anything pop, that sounds nothing like R&B, but I digress.

Back in the day, everything from Deep Purple, Rainbow, Zep, Sabbath, Priest, Motorhead, Hawkwind, etc was all metal or Hard Rock and these were interchangeable terms. They just had their own way of doing it.

Doom, speed, thrash, death, prog, melodic, orchestral and whatever other new term comes up next week - it's all the same stuff. I don't care for anything that simply chugs power chords and shreds at 200mph, over the drone that sound like an elephant vomiting; I don't see that as musicianship.
