Big_Bend June 28th, 2012, 06:55 AM
We all love our guitars. Besides guitars, what other instruments do you really enjoy listening to, or playing? And which musical instruments do you not particularly care for?
I especially love songs that have the classic Hammond B3 Organ (with a Leslie speaker cabinet of course). And I also love songs that have a clarinet. The Hammond B3 is THE quintessential organ sound, full of tubes and richness, impossible to duplicate with a digital keyboard. And I really love old big band music that features the clarinet, ala Benny Goodman. The clarinet just sings to me like no other reed instrument can.
Conversely
I'm sorry but as soon as I hear a Xylaphone I'm changing the station. And I'm not too crazy about flutes either. And synthetic keyboards.. eek! Run!!! But hey thats just me.
What are your other favorite, and least favorite, musical instruments?
Toriginal June 28th, 2012, 07:01 AM I have to agree on the B3 Leslie combination.
About 41 years ago when I was a teen, a band practiced in our basement and a B3 and Leslie was one of the keyboards in use. Even today when I hear the unmistakable sound of that combination, my ears perk up. Wonderfully unique.
Drums would be a favourite as well. I cycled through 4 or 5 kits in my life and do miss the one I sold this year as I exited playing drums. I would hope to get another kit someday but my arm really won't take it these days.
I Love the sound of a good sax player for sure.
I enjoy good bass as well
telequacktastic June 28th, 2012, 07:10 AM Along with my guitars I'm enjoying my first fiddle. I got it for $40 with a case and a bow, and a couple of method books. I'm working on getting some bowing technique going here first. I'm excited to be taking my first lesson on tuesday with a local teacher.
Keys, Bass, Drums, Vibraphone, any string instrument really... I can't think of hardly any instruments played well that I don't enjoy.
blowtorch June 28th, 2012, 07:13 AM bagpipe
LarsOS June 28th, 2012, 07:18 AM Favorites: Bass guitar. Drums. Brass. Organ. Vocals. In roughly that order.
Least favorite: Autotuner-processeed bleating by tone-deaf, arythmic weresheep, aka. popular radio music. (Sorry about insulting the world's sheep. Most actual sheep bleating is much kinder to the ears than that. It's just something about the emptiness of the eyes that made me think of these fine animals.)
edipo June 28th, 2012, 07:29 AM I also play bass and keyboard (mostly synth simulations on a computer and a midi controller) professionally and am working on playing drums again. I'm studynig piano so I can develop my execution on the keys. I'm buying a 4-string banjo from the same guy that hired me to play one years ago. I had recorded mandolin once but i'd like to have one so i could develop on playing in this tuning. I's prefer to have a mandola though. And a tenor guitar.
I'm into the idea that a musician should get any instrument and try to play it smoehow and then, if something comes out of it, try and study, play more and develop.
My dream would be playing baritone sax but it's too expensive to start with. Bass clarinet would be great too.
banjohabit June 28th, 2012, 07:39 AM horns. as in big band swing. otherwise too, but big band is my favorite.
trev333 June 28th, 2012, 07:47 AM the first time I heard that stuck CD sound...
der der der der der der der der ....
I knew it would eventually make it into recorded music... as a legitimate sound....
catchy....
my vote for a new instrument last century.. the stuck CD player sound...
der der der der der der der der der ...
DeepSouth June 28th, 2012, 07:49 AM I like fiddling around with a Theremin. It's like a one string air guitar
Other than that I play piano and use a midi controller keyboard for backing tracks. It can be a poor substitute for real musicians but at least I don't have any arguments with band members
Big_Bend June 28th, 2012, 07:55 AM Least favorite: Autotuner-processeed bleating by tone-deaf, arythmic weresheep, aka. popular radio music. (Sorry about insulting the world's sheep. Most actual sheep bleating is much kinder to the ears than that. It's just something about the emptiness of the eyes that made me think of these fine animals.)
 LMAO all morning on this one thanks!!
bagpipe
Would that be your favorite, or least favorite?
RevMike June 28th, 2012, 07:57 AM Lots of them. To play I love piano and organ. I don't play horns or woodwinds, but love them in a band. I also love the sound of a big double bass....and really love lots of percussion.
Lately I've been playing a lot of ukulele. I find the sound of a good uke to be very soothing.
I can't say that there are any that I dislike (except maybe Chinese Erhu). There are some that I'd say fall into the category of "played well = amazing, played badly = torture". In this category I'd put: Harmonica, accordion, bagpipes....and probably many more I can't think of.
BoogerRooger June 28th, 2012, 08:02 AM Does pedal steel count? It is a guitar but very different to the one I try to play. I love Booogie Woogie piano. And a fiddle or even a tin whistle can bang out rollicking good tunes.
Least favourite - marimbas. No idea what they are but they always seen to feature on records where the producer is trying just too hard to make it interesting.
trev333 June 28th, 2012, 08:35 AM ahh mate.. george zamfir is killer on pan flute... frikken legend...
though Acker Bilk has a style of his own on licorice stick...
I've got an LP here somewhere with Acker and George on the same record.. swapping killer licks...
it was one of those house jokes amongst a few of us when party conversation turned to legendary musicians...
Oh yeh..George.. old georgie zamfir..
what, never heard of him?..
maaaaaate frikken legend.. played wih Acker Bilk,,, you've never heard of georgis zamfir?.. well better go and check a few of his LP's....
thats where kenny G got his chops.
.. at the crossroads... on a dark stormy night where the neighbours couldn't hear him play...a lightning bolt turned his pan flute into a licorice stick.. and he saw Acker... .. changed his life from a closet pan flute player into a world wide sensation... shiite.

Matthias June 28th, 2012, 08:36 AM I like playing bass and mandolin. I love messing about with drums, but get the chance rarely. The one I love and hate is the fiddle. I have one, and it refuses to be tamed!
Doug 54 June 28th, 2012, 10:28 AM piano/keys
bass
sax
least:
harp
fiddles in Celtic stuff (reels)
RomanS June 28th, 2012, 10:40 AM Favorites:
Hammond B3
pedal steel
dobro
accordion (particularly TexMex-style)
banjo (esp. clawhammer/frailing style)
fiddle
mandolin
trumpet
trombone
clarinet
tuba
Least favorite:
didgeridoo (man, I hate those...)
pan flute
bagpipes
saxophone (particularly tenor sax)
80s synthesizers (DX7 and the likes)
dan1952 June 28th, 2012, 10:43 AM Really love string bass and cello, piano under the right hands,, same with drums. Very little tolerance for synth strings ("Let Me Be There" by Olivia N-J comes to mind), and please keep the tambourine to a minimum...
Wailin' Tele June 28th, 2012, 10:55 AM I play banjo and a little piano, wish i had the time to learn how to play them better.
brookdalebill June 28th, 2012, 11:05 AM Love - most string instruments, most keyboards, most percussion, the human voice.
Love less - banjo, dobro, most horns and woodwinds, yodelin' of any type.
basher June 28th, 2012, 11:21 AM I'm a good mandolin player and an undistinguished button accordion player. I love playing mandolin, but it's pretty brutal on my hands so I don't play it very much. Someday I want to get a decent mandola (the same instrument, but bigger and tuned a fifith lower, like a viola). And the accordion is of course the coolest instrument ever.
Instruments I can't stand? Just one: Chapman stick. It's like a guitar for boring people. And for boring people with.
dog fart June 28th, 2012, 11:23 AM Favorites: Bass guitar. Drums. Brass. Organ.
I really enjoy listening to someone with a way with words
Not a big fan of a beat box. Give me a tight rythym section every time. I try not to hate, there's a time and place for almost everything, but the auto-tuner beat box combo just strikes me as anti-music. I have to draw the line somewhere
63dot June 28th, 2012, 11:42 AM Bass and stand up bass are both fun and I am not good at either. Piano is my stong point but I don't spend very much time with it. Drums are fun but I tire out easily.
Wind instruments are the most gorgeous soloing instruments and I have never really tried them but love their sounds. I also have not tried out violin/viola and they look like a blast but with no frets on such short necks, they scare me off.
jonhart June 28th, 2012, 11:51 AM It's hard to even pick a favorite. Yes, I'm mainly a guitarist but that's only because people want me to play guitar. I've only played in one band where they let mke play other instruments too. I love my old Hammond M143, would love to get a Leslie for it. I also love playing bass. A lot of people will hate me for this, but drums are awesome. The reason drummers get so loud is because they get into it. When a guitarist gets into it, you can turn down your volume knob a bit. With all this being said I don't have a favorite, to me they are all equaly fun to play.
purpletele June 28th, 2012, 11:54 AM Drums.
I'm not very good, but I love it. They're fun and great stress relief. I picked up guitar fairly quick and easy as a teenager, but I'll always be a novice drummer. It's nice to not be expected to be good at something sometimes.
A good drum part can really make a song special, as a bad one can really do the opposite.
I'm actually one of the few guitar players (at least the ones I know) that actually has a lot of respect for drummers.
Tidepoolbay June 28th, 2012, 12:22 PM Tenor Sax
Bass
Piano
Drums
stinkey June 28th, 2012, 12:39 PM A lonely cello to accompany acoustic guitar is lovely.
Mouth harp along with the guitar is blues standard to me.
A solo played on an unexpected instrument like an saw, for insistence, that's my cup of tea.
The worst thing to me is trained voices singing folk music or jazz or anything but what they are trained for. So ugly i can't describe it in words.
mal paso June 28th, 2012, 12:54 PM What a cool question!
I think I'm lucky in this regard, because if something is capable of making noise, I can dig on it.
Least favorite? Uh, well, I guess I'd have to go with vocals, only because nothing can screw up good music faster than bad vocals.
And by bad, I mean pyrotechnical, singing competition type vox
allen082 June 28th, 2012, 12:57 PM drums are my favorite to play, but when it comes to listening: hammond/leslie. pumps me up in a way that no other instrument does.
OlRedNeckHippy June 28th, 2012, 01:01 PM Pedal Steel. Anything with a pedal steel in the background does it for me.
and Kazoo's!
idjster June 28th, 2012, 01:04 PM My teen years were the 60's. I played guitar even then. A friend was an excellent keyboard player and started playing in groups (still does) with his cut down B3 and Leslie. That beautiful B3 sound! I just transports me back to 'the summer of love' period! My absolute favourite!
I love most stringed instruments myself, but I love listening to good flute music, any organ or piano music, and well-played upright bass.
Just my $0.02...
Pigweed June 28th, 2012, 01:49 PM Almost anything played live really appeals to me - I hate it at a concert in the park when the performers take a break and someone turns on a recording.
I'm not a huge fan of the pipe organ - but sometimes even that's okay.
Paul in Colorado June 28th, 2012, 01:54 PM Another B-3 lover here!
If I had another life to live, I'd play violin. it takes a long time to play it well, and I'd rather focus on guitar here and now.
I've never been attracted to brass instruments or woodwinds, but I like to listen to them. Any instrument that's played well is worth a listen to me.
TeleTim911 June 28th, 2012, 01:56 PM Besides guitar (no particular order):
Drums
Organ, particularly Hammond and Leslie.
Banjo
Fiddle
Pedal Steel
Piano
Sax or horn section (Sax, Trumpet, Trombone).
Least favorite: can't think of one. Any instrument well played sounds good to me, I'm usually more in awe of the talent than the instruments.
Ryan0594 June 28th, 2012, 05:10 PM How can one dislike or favour an instrument? What's played on it is what counts!
Big_Bend June 28th, 2012, 06:24 PM How can one dislike or favour an instrument? What's played on it is what counts!
Thats like saying how can someone like or dislike different types of music. Not every instrument is pleasing to every ear, nor is every song.
Tomlin_Guitars June 28th, 2012, 06:39 PM Love the Hammond sound! I also like the Vibraphone played in a jazz setting.
Least favorite: hearing a person whistle in a song. I'm sure I will catch a lot of heat for saying this, but I absolutely despise every song that has whistling in it. It doesn't matter if I really like the artist to begin with, the whistling starts, I turn it off.
Torz Johnson June 28th, 2012, 06:56 PM I love the sound of a grand piano. Not crazy about saxophones and clarinets.
New York's alright if you like saxophones.
Blazer June 28th, 2012, 07:01 PM Least favourite - marimbas. No idea what they are but they always seen to feature on records where the producer is trying just too hard to make it interesting.
BzpqGdZ_ygU
I don't know The Rolling stones' "Under my thumb" is a killer song in my book and it features marimba.
Anyway, besides playing guitar I'm also an avid bassplayer and I can't resist the roar of a Hammond. I also love the blooming sound of an upright bass and I love jazz.
As for dislikes, I don't like monotone music and popular music these days keeps on getting more and more monotonous. I might kick a couple of shins here but ever since having played in a cover band where we covered "Sweet Home Alabama" I've grown to hate that song because of it being so monotonous, it's just repeating the same chords over and over and over.
DeepSouth June 28th, 2012, 07:10 PM Favorites:
Least favorite:
didgeridoo (man, I hate those...)
Didn't you forget Alpenhorn?
bender-freak June 28th, 2012, 07:21 PM Ones I can play good enough to hire out on would be
guitar, bender guitar, dobro, bass, synth guitar, lap steel.
Ones I am very annoying with
pedal steel, banjo, keys, harmonica
DrumBob June 28th, 2012, 10:09 PM Drums is first, as that's my main instrument, then guitar. I also play some blues harp and that's fun, as well some mountain dulcimer, bass, and some very basic mandolin. I also mess about with a really nice Native American flute I acquired years ago.
If I had it to do over, I'd play a Hammond B3. In fact, if I ever have the room and the $$, I'm going to buy a B3 and Leslie just to mess around with. That "Gimme Some Lovin" sound just blows me away every time; an overdriven B3 through a Leslie. Killer.
felis June 29th, 2012, 01:55 AM
Besides guitars, what other instruments do you really enjoy listening to
I love the sound of an acoustic violin (even more than guitar ).
nosuch June 29th, 2012, 02:06 AM Another Hammond fan here. And I love the Rhodes-Piano as well as acoustic piano. Also like to hear acoustic bass and electric bass guitar. Not to forget drums and percussion.
I also like flute, saxophone, clarinet, trumpet and trombone.
Once in a while harp and steel guitar is nice.
I can't really mention instruments I do not like - every sound has it's right time. I do not like cheesy 80s synthies.
Mudguard June 29th, 2012, 01:28 PM Likes: Guitar, clarinet, trumpet, bass, banjo (strummed)
Dislikes: Vibes, some accordion/concertina (but I like bandoneon as in local tango, or very tastefully used), cheesy 80s synth when used in love songs (no problem when it's used to rock alla "The Power of Love" or "Jump")
I like the sound of trombones too, it has a very special personality.
twangjeff June 29th, 2012, 01:46 PM I love things that in my mind pair well with guitar.
I think of pedal steel, also a big fan of B3 organ (Kenny Burrell/ Jimmy Smith, Wes Montgomery/ Mel Rhyme), and also I have to say that listening to people play non pedal steel guitar is a real treat. I love the sound of that bar twisting, it is more organic sounding to me that pedal steel. I remember going to the Continental Club and hearing Redd Volkaert with Cindy Cashdollar. I could listen to THAT all day long.
dblues June 29th, 2012, 04:32 PM Seems like most of my favorites have been mentioned: B3, Fender Rhodes, steel guitar, accordions and brass and woodwinds. Really didn't think I had a least favorite and then it occurred to me that I have never heard a saw played with out wishing something would happen and it would stop, soon.
Chris Browne June 29th, 2012, 04:52 PM I can listen to the Ukulele all day...and can't stand the sound of piezo-amplified acoustic guitars.
Mudguard June 29th, 2012, 09:54 PM I second the lack of love for piezo-amplified acoustic guitars (sometimes I really hate that sound!) but I don't like ukuleles either!
' burn 08 June 29th, 2012, 10:10 PM well, I used to play alto sax. i really like sax. But it has been probably like 15 years since I've played regularly. maybe slightly longer. I wouldn't mind getting another and starting back up. This may sound funny, but I used to play tuba as well and it is actually pretty fun. You've think it would get boring. I was a pretty solid tuba player, but I gave it up when I got the high school. Playing tuba just doesn't land the women like playing football does.
I'd like to learn to play piano. I enjoy listening to piano very much.
hotraman June 30th, 2012, 12:38 AM Keyboards ( I bough the new Yamaha Mox 6 for the B3 sounds)
Pedal steel ( I'm ok on this, need to get better)
Mandolin, and Uke.
Telarkaster June 30th, 2012, 01:22 AM I'll vote for sitar as a fave. Someone has to.
Not big on ukes.
TwangBilly June 30th, 2012, 04:03 AM I want a B3! When it comes to electric instruments, for me there must be tubes! I love quality acoustics, especially vintage! And I love most instruments in general so I could go on at length. But besides my best efforts as a bad player to master the Telecaster, and besides guitar, my main instrument I am most proficient on is mandolin. I also play a little fiddle, and dabble in piano and banjo, and I am really wanting to get into pedal steel. The hammer dulcimer is most enchanting. Also the cello just does something to me. And bagpipes, OHHH the pipes! They call to me from ancient of times when my fathers roamed the highlands of Ireland and Wales! Gotta get me some pipes!
sigalaboon June 30th, 2012, 01:19 PM Cowbell.

eyerish June 30th, 2012, 02:45 PM I pretty much like all instruments.
I personally try to play a variety myself.
like guitars,Erhu's,violins,keyboards/pianos,cigar box instruments, psaltery, banjo and so many more. I love illeann pipes and organs and love to listen to other reedc instruments like sax a clarinet. I am not worth a ding in playing those though.

eyerish June 30th, 2012, 02:49 PM I play ukuleles and accordions and recorders and tinwhistles and lots more. Music is a blast. I haven't really come across an unliked instrument. Many unliked songs or uses of instruments. The instruments thewmselves all have something to offer in the right hands to the right ears.
simplemusican August 3rd, 2012, 04:06 PM Homebuyer emando
tele salivas August 3rd, 2012, 04:48 PM I am hooked on pedal steel, like I was on electric guitar at age 13 -15.
I also like cheap keyboards and electronic devices through effects.
BBill64 August 3rd, 2012, 09:18 PM Synths are probably the most expressive instruments other than the electric guitar. I bloody love 'em, I just wish I had more!
And could play keys better!
jmiles August 3rd, 2012, 09:30 PM My favorite? Really hard to say, as i have a favorite for each type of music I play. For steel though, the Kline 12 string Uni was my money maker. Love the Shobuds too. And The Billy Goat Tele? Been playing Teles for 50 years, and this one kills them all!
thorton077 August 3rd, 2012, 09:50 PM I don't play anything else, but drums seem cool.
Least favorite is whatever's used to make dubstep
davidchagrin August 4th, 2012, 12:09 AM I love the ukulele. Such a great sound. It's always underestimated and overlooked, but there's a resurgance happening.
Lunchie August 4th, 2012, 12:22 AM I would like to get a nice piano at some point... dont really have the room at atm for one though...
CrisHendrix August 4th, 2012, 01:15 AM Favorite would have to be keyboard, whatever its emulating (piano, organ, etc)
Used to want a hammond with a leslie or a rhodes but am pretty happy with the samples and simulations out there these days.
Least favorite: sitar, easily. Not sure if there was ever a song with sitar on it that I enjoyed, it completely ruined several beatles songs that I can think of
I've found good uses for tuba before (can get a cool low end growl on them) but never sitar
Boblets August 4th, 2012, 03:20 AM I like to listen to French Horns and whatever instruments used in the original theme tune for The Virginian.
gmann August 4th, 2012, 05:39 AM Fav? B3 w/Leslie.
Least fav, panflute. This is followed closely by spoons which is not a real instrument. When someone pulls these out at a bluegrass festival it affects my mood greatly.
kyle64 August 4th, 2012, 06:29 AM Favourites are definitely Organ, Harmonica, and pedal steel and i would add tambourine and maracas to that lol
I can't stand the sound of synth tho
SpeyFly August 4th, 2012, 12:02 PM F/B flat French Horn...
