Allparts Necks- Finishing Quality

Hey there, I know this has been discussed a little before, but I cant find exactly what i'm searching for via google search.

I remember reading that allparts nitro finished necks were actually nitro over poly. But then I think I remember reading that they had fixed this BS and started having pure nitro finishes... maybe i dreamed it!

Now that I've found some wonderfully discounted allparts dealers I would love to get a fat neck for my newly acquired telemaster- it has an MJT surf green jazzmaster body with a MIM maple neck. The neck fits perfectly in the pocket and is pretty okay- but I'd like something fatter, more vintage tint, and with bigger frets.

so how are the nitro finishes on allparts necks these days? I can do fretwork pretty well- but how are the frets- dont they come with a nut too? Will my MIM tuners drop in?

More over, Has anyone tried the new (i believe they're new at least) allparts "satin aged-look finish" guitar necks? From trying to compare this discount sites product to allparts site it looks like they actually might be poly finishes. But I'm all well and good with that if they're thin enough. I have a blacktop strat neck that doesnt even have a thin finish that resonates beautifully with poly.

Anyways- some answers would be lovely! Finish work aint cheap and I'm a huge fan of that smooth back of the neck feel. Making me wanna get a solid rosewood neck from warmoth! But I love me some vintage tint maple necks!

I buy All Parts when the budget dictates and I finish my own necks with a couple of pass of Minwax Gloss lacquer from a rattle can and let dry for 3 days. If you want a satin finish on the back then take some 0000 steel wool to it till its the way you want it. Save yourself a bunch of money. As far a your tuners I don't know. All Parts makes their necks with the vintage kluson tuner post diameter. I usually pay about $139.00 unfinished. As far a tinting the neck most woodworking stores sell tinting lacquer in rattle cans Woodcrafters comes to mind. They run about $15.00 or I suggest buying some Watcos to finish the neck and bombard it with a UV lamp until you get the tint you want. A lot of different ways to get where you want to go with a little time and not much money. Definitely cheaper than buy the neck finished.

I like the Allparts neck, but I buy them unfinished as well. I prefer my necks w/ Tru-Oil for that reason. As for tuners, like to use Sperzel locking tuners, so I do have to drill out the holes to make them larger. You have to be careful when drilling, so that the drill bit does't bind on you and tear out the maple.

I'm looking for reviews on allparts finished necks... I dont buy from allparts, I have a source that is dirt cheap for their finished necks... Not even close to allparts website prices, i mean not even close.

I dont want to finish my neck by myself with tru oil. Unless I can get a vintage tint with tru oil... I definitely dont want that ridiculous looking white neck that some fenders have... like the american nashville b bender or the squier classic vibe walnut along with many other teles. That white neck just looks terrible to me.

so does tru oil tint the neck?

i've played necks with home done finishes using minwax and other non guitar specfic made stuff and yeh tru oil was awesome, but i thought that was on a neck that someone already tinted. I want my neck to be sealed, tinted and nitro finished more than anything really. Tru oil. some other minwax necks i've felt were terribly done- super sticky, uneven looking, just poor.

So... Has anyone tried a finished neck from allparts? Look to my original post for the questions I would like answered... how thick? how is the new poly satin aged neck finish? Is there nitro still nitro over poly? I'd say the $50 extra I'd be paying for the finish is worth it if the finish work allparts does these days is decent enough. so anyone out there have experience? When did you purchase the neck? Recently or a while back? What finish was it?

Thanks a bunch!
