7171551 June 26th, 2012, 06:55 AM ... I have seen some old posts here, but nothing recent. As a proud owner  I wondered what (if any) response I would get to this question?
My guitar, pictured, has a Seymour Duncan and a Kent Armstrong fitted which sound good to me! It plays well and I like the neck profile. Build quality is excellent.
But it's the looks...
So what do you think? Don't be shy, I won't be offended
gitold June 26th, 2012, 07:26 AM I've always liked those.
Jupiter June 26th, 2012, 07:34 AM Me too. I might have bought one a couple years ago, but they're rare as hen's teeth in Japan.
Joe Sailor June 26th, 2012, 09:10 AM I love the look, different enough but not too far out, has familiar elements. How many strat and les paul copies have you seen?
I am a basement player and always sit, I find LP's very awkward, I'm always shifting it around.
How does the '61 feel?
I think it has something to do with the leg cut being close to the strings.

... It feels just right to me! The whole package has a reassuringly sturdy and comfortable vibe about it. I mainly play sitting too and (heresy) I think the '61 is more accomodating than my tele. Sounds as good too- in its own way! I really like the P90.
I must say how surprised I am with these positive comments  As you may have gathered, I myself have severe misgivings about the design and colour/finish of this guitar... But it plays so good I just try not to look at it!
telleutelleme June 26th, 2012, 11:24 AM Tele's got back.
I have a Bluesmaster and love playing it but they're not pretty. I think the playability and neck hooked me as well. Initially I didn't care for them. Had I not been in Memphis and played them all at St. Blues, I would have passed just on looks.

Do you like playing with a Les Paul?
Severe misgivings on the look? I think its cool.
stnmtthw June 26th, 2012, 10:52 PM I like it.
djphelan01 June 27th, 2012, 07:12 AM I like it a lot. Just like Joe Sailor said its different enough but not that far out. I've always wanted to try one but I've never seen one in person. Lately that seems to be the theme for all the guitars i have gas for.
benderb9 June 27th, 2012, 07:33 AM has a kind of L-00 slope to the bouts...I like the subtle variation. Teles always made me think acoustic and woman with their curves, this St Blues even more so.
Dogface June 27th, 2012, 09:14 AM Jobba the Tele...
studio1087 June 27th, 2012, 03:08 PM A store in Milwaukee used to sell those.
I think that they look very cool. Love the way they look.
I have never had the fun of playing one.
Kamelot July 25th, 2012, 08:13 AM Just bought one of these - kinda excited in the way that only GAS can cause! It looks to be exactly the same model as at the start of the thread; you can see it here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/330765869561?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

Hey Congratulations!
Yup, looks to me to be the same model. Well done- I think you stole it at that price  You paid a bit LESS than I did for mine in a private sale- and I was well pleased with that result.
I didnt even see that was up or I'd have watched to see what it went for...
Please let us know what you make of it. I still find this is one of my favourite guitars to play.
bargoedboy July 25th, 2012, 05:51 PM I used to have a 2 p90 version, nice guitar well made, just the neck was too thin for me.
Popped into their place In Memphis, just up from Sun, didn`t realise they were there untill I came back to car. Went in and had a nice chat with the guys.
7171551 July 25th, 2012, 06:04 PM ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
...Y'know, sometimes as I sit here... perched on the edge of the Arctic Circle, in the Land Of Eternal Rain... I wonder how it all went wrong....
spikypaddy July 25th, 2012, 07:40 PM I've not played one, but the looks are... unique... Not a fan of the aesthetics.
Ringo July 25th, 2012, 10:33 PM I remember when they first made those here in Memphis at Strings and Things, a lot of those old Strings and Things , later St Blues guitars were really well made and played and sounded great, my buddy had a Tele style with 2 hot Schecter humbuckers, trem bridge , push pull pots to tap the pickups, it sounded great.
No offense but I personally don't care for the looks of the 61 South Model as they call it now. It just doesn't look "balanced", too fat at the bottom or too skinny at the top , just my opinion.

Waiting with baited breath now until my cheque clears and she arrives - I'll definitely update you on what I think.
As far as looks, I like it. It has that ugly/pretty vibe for me. Ugly/pretty = sexy - No-one would ever accuse say, Steve Tyler or Brodie Dalle of being pretty - but sexy? No doubt. That's the St Blues shape for me. A Marmite guitar, just like a classic Tele in fact.
7171551 July 26th, 2012, 09:13 AM Well it seems the answer to my original question is: yes- there is some love for the 61 South!
Even it's appearance gets a (slight) thumbs up... although personally I kinda share Ringo's opinion
As Kamelot says, a Marmite guitar indeed.
boris bubbanov July 26th, 2012, 09:43 AM has a kind of L-00 slope to the bouts...I like the subtle variation. Teles always made me think acoustic and woman with their curves, this St Blues even more so.
The Tele makes me think of a gal who it fitted to a size 6 skirt and a size 8 blouse.
The St. Blues South looks like a gal who is fitted to a size 14 skirt and a size 2 blouse.
The guitar looks seriously unwieldy. I can't get past the looks. I don't mind a little extra hip, but this is far too much and no chest at all.
99ml430 August 5th, 2012, 09:17 AM Always loved the original run of these guitars but they are hard to find. I pulled the trigger on a black '61 South w/a Bigsby and a fairly rare peptol bismol pink Bluesmaster. Great guitars for the money.
idjster August 5th, 2012, 11:43 AM I like them. I think they look fine!
NastyMojo August 8th, 2012, 04:58 PM I'm afraid that is just not for me,its hideous
KyAnne August 9th, 2012, 09:02 PM Put you some black flat top Vol. and tone knobs on it and it'd be 100% FINE!!!
E5RSY August 9th, 2012, 09:22 PM It would benefit from a thinline-type pickguard, and lose the f-hole...it looks completely out of place and incorrectly positioned. Also, the butterscotch finish immediately makes me compare it to a '52 RI, whether I want to, or not.
Overall, not my cup of tea. It might look cool in surf green with a white p'guard, though.
