fender62custom June 26th, 2012, 06:09 AM Now there's nothing more timeless than a Lacquered Tweed in my eyes. ...a tweed will always stop me in my tracks ..whether it be a Victoria, Peavey, Fender or a no name kit build etc...love them all...plenty of mojo...whether they are weathered & battered or brand spanking new!! let's see them...take some fresh pics...some nice close ups...front ,back.......you know the drill...is there a history behind yours...any mods etc...over to you.
Here's mine...2012 Twinolux...no history apart from gassing for one..no mods

dmarg1045 July 21st, 2012, 09:37 AM I've posted pix of my '55 Deluxe on TDPRI before, but you look like you need some company, so here goes:

t-luxe July 21st, 2012, 09:00 PM Thanks!
This is how she looked when I brought her home.
fender62custom July 21st, 2012, 09:37 PM Great to see that lil 49 go to a new home & in one piece..that's a neat looking Tele too!!
Del Pickup July 22nd, 2012, 08:59 PM Here's my 57 Twin RI. It's my baby!!
Would love to hear how it compares to the new Twinolux......
fender62custom July 22nd, 2012, 09:48 PM Greetings Del...very similar specs...the EC has the attenuator!!...i'd prefer no EC badge though..looks a little tacky to me...sort of takes away from it l reckon!! love yours too!!! the EC is very sweet sounding..a little boxy in the attenuated 1x12 & 2x12 -1/4 power settings..incredible when she's opened up...still like it & it's more than serviceable in it's attenuated settings...just prefer it opened up...cheers!!
Victor
Del Pickup July 22nd, 2012, 10:23 PM That's exactly what it should sound like when it's only running 1 speaker - should be more like a 12W tweed deluxe.
I could be very tempted with this newer model if I ever got the chance but they're a heck of a price here - NZ$6000!!!!
That was the price on mine when it first arrived in the country way back in 2005/6 and it sat in the shop for 2 years before they reduced the price enough to convince anyone (read - me!!) to part with their cash. And I got 25% off it which made it a good buy at the time.
The only 'problem' with it is that it is a loud amp and I've never yet been able to gig with it - even on outdoor gigs - set above 5 or 6. So I never get to hear its natural overdriven tones. I ended up buying a Lovepedal Les Lius to get those dirty tweed tones - and it works well at decent giggable volumes - but it would still be nice to just crank the amp and get these tones.
So the attenuator must be a great addition to your amp. And the tremolo as well would be something I'd be using a lot.
fender62custom July 22nd, 2012, 10:38 PM Greetings Del!! she also runs with 2x12 in the attenuated setting.....perfect for recording..and very usable..the tremolo is an awesome feature...l got mine at a price l couldn't refuse...under $3000 so i'm very fortunate considering they are $2999 in most reputable Fender dealerships in the US as we speak...if your chasing gear;feel free to PM me & l may be able to source something for you here...have some good contacts.
t-luxe July 22nd, 2012, 10:46 PM I don't play my 5E3 out, but when I want to crank it, a Weber Mini Mass
works pretty well.
My old 5A3, OTOH, isn't as loud and can be pretty much cranked with impunity at home. Needless to say, it gets alot more playing time than my 5E3.
Bulldog87 July 22nd, 2012, 10:55 PM http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd401/bayoubulldog/Cabronita017.jpg
Blues Junior NOS... I LOVE Tweed, and fender62custom I am jealous w/ the EC amp! That is a fine looking tweed!
fender62custom July 22nd, 2012, 11:07 PM Thanks Bulldog!!! the EC is my dream amp...love your set up...great combo of Blues Jr and Cabronita..must be real sweet together!!!! cheers!!!
Del Pickup July 22nd, 2012, 11:58 PM With the Twinolux I know that the full power setting is a 40W amp but is there any definite detail about the outputs at the 'low power' and 1 speaker settings?
I'd be guessing that with only 1 speaker operating it's like a 12W Deluxe and maybe the low power setting with both speakers might be around 20-25W but is there any definite info on this anywhere?
Whatever the answers I'm thinking that this could be like having 3 amps in one and maybe the ideal option for those of us who gig but also like to crank their amp for recording at quieter volumes - and possibly even using it on the low power setting for creamy overdrive at smaller-medium sized venues?
Final question! Is the tremolo footswitchable?
fender62custom July 23rd, 2012, 02:39 AM Greetings Del!! the EC does seem to open up a tad with a little more volume with the 2x12 setting!!! there's a little more authority there...the specs don't mention any increase nor do l see any info stating that fact...all it says is in the attenuated setting it's at 1/4 power.. the Tremolo is foot switchable[single]..each setting is distinct to my ears....l hope that answers your questions Del..cheers mate.
t-luxe July 23rd, 2012, 08:05 PM I'm lovin' that guitar, Bulldog87. What is it? Are those Filtertrons?
utmotrix July 27th, 2012, 12:43 AM Folks
I'm on the verge of buying a Tweed (probably Li'l dawg) but need some advice.
I play at several fairly loud Blues Jams each week. Currently running a BillM modified Blues Jr with a C-Rex 12 in it. My volume is usually at 4-5. It's loud - the C-Rex is very efficient.
I believe I'd be lost with a 12 watt 5E3. I bought (and returned to GC after 3 days) a Fender Excelsior. It was a joke - couldn't even hear myself and it was dimed.
So I'll probably need something with 6L6's.
Question is - with a 35 watt 5E3 will I get any of that luscious break-up or will it be too clean at the volume I'm describing?.
All my guits are single coil - I use a USA G&L Asat S model primarily.
I don't want to have to use pedals - I love a Tweed's natural grit.
thanks

I'd suggest that any amp with 35-40W output will seldom if ever be able to be turned up to the sweet spot that gives the gritty tweed tone you're looking for without pedals.
My 57 Twin RI is never above 5 - 6 even on big stages. At club gigs I'm lucky if I can get it up to 5 once the band warms up later in the evening. That's why I bought a Lovepedal Les Lius to give me the tweed dirt without the volume.
Some would say that it's silly using a pedal like that with my amp but I just would never get away with turning the amp up to around 8 - it's too damn loud. And 35W won't be any quieter.
That's why, the more I think about it, the more I'd like to get my hands on one of the new Twinolux's with the built in attenution. I think that might be ideal if it wasn't for the price!!!

I'll tell you what I think based on the Mission 5E3 clone I have now and the assorted BF amps I've gigged.
For a given amp/speaker, you have one volume level or narrow range where you're in the sweet spot or getting that sweet power tube break up. If you change to a more or less efficient speaker, you can move that sweet spot louder or softer. But that's about all there is to it. Not real good if you have to adapt to your situation, no problem if the situation has to adapt to you.
An attenuater should be the answer to the problem, though. I've never had one, so I don't really know.
Warm Gums July 28th, 2012, 08:07 PM Have a Marsh Harvard clone, that I got for a song.
Great amp, haven't been playing it much recently, perhaps I will get it back in the rotation soon..

Way cool! In the 60's, that Farfisa was the go-to organ for most of the soul top 40 cover bands around Baltimore. Not too many could haul a B3 around. The Wurlitzer EP under the right hands is definitely the funkiest sound of all time.
Wish I was a little closer to Milwaukee, Danny. You've definitely got an extremely cool set up there. Just don't tell me you have an Ampeg B15N, that would finish me for sure.

Victor, what you have said, to the ears of someone like me, could not be more appreciated. All of the expense and effort is designed exactly to create the ambience, and - most importantly - the sounds, that inspire our shared passion for music. You might be surprised how many people don't get it!

I think I'll drop to a 25 watt. Have to have the dirt.
jmiles July 31st, 2012, 09:16 PM '56 Pro. Been in most of the studios in Cleveland and Akron. I was gigging with it, and became worried that I might blow the original 15. So I boxed it up, and made a sub baffleboard using a Peavey Scorpion Plus 12. Don't know why, but they're an awesome combination. Until my buddies moved to Nashville, and became "Cats," they borrowed it for every session they did in town.
The other is far more interesting! It's a '52 Wide Panel Pro. Yeah, yeah,,, wide panels didn't come out until 53. Wrong! These were probably ordered at NAMM in '52. Jody Carter remembers them being ordered by a music store in Indiana. I have tracked down 4 so far. The owner of Corner Music has a '52 Twin, I have the Pro, a steel player on the West Coast has a split-front Dual Pro, and so does Billy Gibbons.
No Tweed! They're painted with a super durable paint, popular for machines, kitchen cabinetry, etc., in the Fifties. It's called Roxatone, and is still available! All the amps have the same style handle too. Jody Carver was working with Leo back then, and he thought they were "fugly!" Incredibly rare! octal pres, and they sound fabulous!

jmiles September 25th, 2012, 05:44 PM Danny,
I have a bunch of amps, from '52 Fender Pro to Dr Z amps, and my favorite is my '56 Pro Amp. They're just wonderful amps. I love 15" speakers for my Teles, but I was afraid I was gonna blow up the '56 speaker, so I put in a sub-baffle board with an odd choice of a speaker, a Peavey 12" Scorpion Plus. Abdo-lute killer amp. Back in my studio days, it got into almost every studio in the Cleveland/Akron area. Wonderful sounds---------
Do you hand everything from the ceiling?
RubyRae September 25th, 2012, 07:38 PM Nice one jipes. Real nice one Danny! I would love a pro someday! Congrats man, your collection is looking very nice regardless of the upside down pic. lol.
mr.danny September 25th, 2012, 09:08 PM Thanks guys! This is an amp that needs to be reined in, it wants to rawck!
Memo to self: stop using picturetrail.com ;)

A huge congrats on that Pro Danny!
With two 5E3s that are different enough to give up something each on their own and the Tweed Pro I would have to pick the Pro if I had to but the others would be hard as all get out to see part, they are all close to my musical heart.
The Tremolus and early Deluxe would be the same way but that Pro is tops and a nice find.

Made by a guy named Pete Bradt. Yeah the Champ has less meat on its tone, and the cleans are not as nice I find.
Im really liking the GE's and RCA's. Its the classic tweed tone youve heard in many classics.

Any Tweed era amp is certainly welcome & is certainly a tweed amp...what type of wood are you going with steve...l love finger jointed cabs with all their wooden glory exposed... can't wait to see the finished result!!! cheers

Steve G December 9th, 2012, 05:09 AM Cheers guys. Im kind of split as to what kind of cab. I had the idea because I always loved the look when the tweed wears on the corners of old amps and you can see the wood.. also got inspiration from the custom builds on TDPRI. The guy who is building the amp has some pine, he's going to see if thats fit for purpose.. I'll keep ya posted!
keithb7 December 10th, 2012, 12:04 AM A couple of tweeds I built. The rear is a 5F2A, and a 5F1 up front, which I just finished tonight. I just love these little tweed amps. They sure sound great.

Recently got a Louis Electric Buster, which is based on a 5E3 but with 6L6s, and voiced a bit differently, a little tighter than a tweed deluxe especially in the bass notes. And it doesn't have a tweed cab! But it's a tweed amp at heart. I'm really liking it, sweet mid heavy sounds.

Some tweed love: Princeton, Deluxe, and Pro.
All by Mike Cucci @ ChickenPickin' Amps.
Each has its own 'thang.' The Princeton is great for noodling/practicing alone at home. The Deluxe, well, y'all know what it's about. With a Red Fang (thanks Fezz) it's a monster that can be tamed (somewhat) or unleashed. My favourite, though, is the Pro. It just mates so well with the tele. Takes pedals nicely too. Something about that 15" speaker. If I'm going to use any pedal to push things it's a Timmy. Mates well with the voice of these amps.
Gotta love tweed!

Jack Knife April 21st, 2013, 05:44 PM I've got a Weber 5E5-A kit that's got a little story behind. I bought it already assembled, got a great deal on it because it had some issues. I fixed those up and used it for about two years. It still had some deeper issues though, like it hated pedals and had some sterility in the sound that could not be dialed out. Some dodgy construction techniques, too.
I rebuilt it this spring, ripped out the Weber tag board and replaced it my own p-t-p circuit. Did a few mods and this thing is absolutely the best sounding amp I've ever had now.
Here's a clip of some noodling around with a clean Strat sound.

Jack Knife April 22nd, 2013, 02:22 PM  Thanks, on both counts.
It was really fun re-doing this amp. Was just wanking on it this morning. Still the best amp I've ever heard or played

geemo May 12th, 2013, 11:18 AM Some tweed love: Princeton, Deluxe, and Pro.
Really a nice pile of tweed there! How are the cp Amps?

Forgot to ask, did you go with a 12" or a 15" speaker in it?

Everyone (TDPRI's and TGP's) who has commented on Mike's CP Amps only has positive things to say about the build and the tone. I know I am very pleased with these amps.
I don't have much experience with the "real deals" but those who have say his amps are on par. Some have even said they prefer his to their original.
Mike's a great guy to work with. He can do modifications (within reason) if you have a particular want. I went with his stock builds and as I said I am very happy with these amps.
I like all three but really like that Pro. My tele is in love with it. It takes pedals very well too. My Timmy just melds with it.
Never thought I'd see the day playing with a 15"er. Now I'm hooked.

andrew May 17th, 2013, 04:24 PM Just sent in the payment on a Lil Dawg. Ordered up a 5F4 with a 2x10 cab and Jim can change out the power output and it should be around 25 watts. Can't wait for the tweed.
