dog fart June 25th, 2012, 09:44 PM I'm looking for an inexpensive Bass. I see a PV Fury with the Super Ferrite pup show up on C-list every now and then. Occasionally one of the P-bass styled ones shows up as well.
Does anybody have any opinions about the differences between pickups, construction quality, neck shape, weight or anything else good or bad about the Fury? Are they as heavy as a water-logged T-20?
mudbelly June 26th, 2012, 10:12 AM Don't know about the Fury but have played a couple of J-bass PV copies owned by friends. They had the same model name, Millinum I think on the headstock but one was nicer, better finished neck, fret work and so on than the other and I think a higher grade model. These were late model guitars, imports. Gives me the impression that playing these in the store might be a wise idea.
big-daddy-59 June 27th, 2012, 12:30 PM The USA made Fury-the P-bass style ones are very nice basses. They tend to have very shallow necks, so be sure to check the relief and make sure the truss rod works.

Thanks, the neck is my biggest concern. My first guitar was a Memphis P-bass. It's neck took a banana shaped profile within a year. I'm trying to set up a time to look at a P-Bass styled Fury. I'll give it a very close look. I hope to have a Bass by the weekend.
bcat June 27th, 2012, 10:59 PM I've got a T20 w/super ferrite p/u and a P bass. The PV is in the ballpark of the P but brighter. My drummer told me he prefers it for that reason.
My PV is about 3/4 lb heavier than my P. No big deal. Get a wide strap and do a couple pushups.
Every PV neck I've played has been thin, too thin for my preference. I haven't seen any problems with my current or previous one, though. And PV has awesome customer service if you have any questions. In fact, they sent me some small parts at no charge.
I don't know any other MIA basses in their price range, if that's important to you.
oldmark July 8th, 2012, 03:53 PM I have a 90's USA made Peavey Foundation bass i found in a pawn shop several years ago in dismal condition. Bought it and a hard case for $160, and it has been the best I have played since I started in 1963. It has a better neck than my old 70's Fender Tele bass, which was the best I had played previous to this.
Peavey neck shapes are very comfortable to play, and very solidly made. I have 4 of their old guitars, too and they are ALL great necks...they also have a micro tilt adjustment screw in the base of the neck, so you can get exactly-exactly-the neck angle you want...it is just a great advantage.
My Peavey has the 2 Super Ferrite pups, v and t, and a simple bridge, big tuners and little else. Sounds and plays great, and I understand some people really like them for recording. I use Fender flats on mine...I like a very bassy, fat sound.
It is MIM - Made in Mississippi!

SamClemons July 8th, 2012, 05:11 PM Most of the US made Peavey basses are very nice and usually a bargain.
dog fart July 9th, 2012, 12:06 AM Should have updated this thread. I ended up with a US made Fury P-Bass for less than $200. I looked at one shortly after posting the original question, but I felt that the neck on that one was sketchy. This one is thin but plays nice and clean. I'm playing at the house through my Bassman. I need to calm my GAS down long enough to find a decent amp.
I'm having problems posting my pics to image shack. Once I get that worked out I'll work on getting the pic posted here. Having a blast!

Fart, you can adjust the truss rod to your liking and then adjust the neck angle to get it exact.
Peavey has manuals for all these old basses online for free...just download them.

I appreciate the link. I didn't realize you could adjust the neck angle until I got this one home. For all the smack people (me included) talk about Peavey, they really have their act together. I would have prefered a wider neck at the nut, but it doesn't seem any worse than some Jazz Basses I've looked at. Not that I'm an expert on basses or anything.
I still can't post on Image shack. I went there and one of those fake Virus scans tried to hijack my computer. I went there today and my anti-virus doesn't want me to log in. I think it's time to set up an account with photobucket
oldmark July 14th, 2012, 09:23 AM Peavey-especially the older US made Peavey instruments are really great players. I have 4 of their guitars and 5 of their amps, and probably all of them together are about the price os a used Gibson. The neck design is great and very solid and that adjustable neck angle is a real advantage.
They make many styles of bass amp, and used ones can be found very cheap online or in stores.
Good luck.

dog fart July 16th, 2012, 09:46 PM Yeah the amp is the next purchase. I'm playing through my old Bassman Ten ATM. It's far from ideal and I'm afraid to push it because I don't want to blow the 40 year old speakers. There's a Sheffield equiped TKO on C-list for $175. It's been there for a few weeks, the seller might be ready to deal.
backalleyblues July 16th, 2012, 10:31 PM Nice score, DF, I picked up a Fury bass from a pawnshop about a year ago for $75... plays nice, sounds good, Ugly as Sin (it's been stripped and...I'm not sure what was done to it). I use it for writing and recording demos, and I'm sure I could use it on a gig. The neck is kinda shallow, but I don't mind with my smallish hands...

Stratburst July 17th, 2012, 01:44 PM Those Peavey Furys are a helluva value. I bought one for $100 plus assorted discounts (don't remember how much; it was a bankruptcy sale) and that pickup could hold its own with my buddy's DiMarzio Model P. I later gave it to a friend whose bass got hocked by a "friend" for drugs.
This wasn't it but this is identical. As I recall, the nut was fairly narrow and the neck was a V shape.

dog fart July 17th, 2012, 08:41 PM ^^^^ That's the one, only mine's white. The first white guitar I've ever owned. Checking the SN it's probably a '93. I spent most of today buying a new used car, it seemed more important than an amp. Did I just say that  I want a better amp in the worst way, but it has to wait.
El Hefe July 24th, 2012, 12:18 AM Man that's a looker! I'd like to try one out when im ready to buy another bass.
