Help With The Song "The Chair" by G. Strait

I'm usually really good about figuring out chords. This one has me stumped.

Towards the end of the song he's singing:

"Oh, I like you too, and to tell you the truth, That wasn't my chair after all."

Then it repeats and pauses on the word "truth" letting that chord sort of ring out.

They are doing a run-down from D to Bm, and then...

What is the chord they are playing on the word "truth"?

It seems to have a Bb root, but it's driving me nuts trying to find the rest.

The internet has Bm, Em, all sorts of stuff....not correct.

Thanks.

F#7, like Crazy? Isn't the melody note E, the b7 of F#7?

I play it as a Bbm, FWIW

I also play the walkdown in the middle as D – C#m – Bm – Bbm - Bm - E – A

I'm sure there's lots of fancier chords to use, but these have always worked for me

Cheers,
Doug

That chord is F#7. The walk down is D C#m Bm F#7...Bm E A. Leon has it exactly right. FWIW, it's the same chord as "well, that makes...(two of us") in the verse.

I play it like this... seems to work

Capo at II fret

1-------------------------------------
2-----1-----3-----1-----3------------------
3-----0-----0-----0-----4-----------------
4-----2-----0-----2-----2-----------------
5-----3-----2-----0-------------------------
6-----------------------4--------------

So that's how it fits under the hands with the capo...
Theoretically it's...

D A/C# Bm7 F#7/A#
I like you to and to tell you the truth

Happy Pickin'!!

The A/C# sounds okay, but the recording is definitely a C#m. Here (http://www.cowboylyrics.com/tabs/strait-george/the-chair-1624.html#.T-jNF_WjOSo) is a chart which is pretty accurate except for the key. If you capo 2, this will be right on, maybe with the exception of the E7/G#. I don't think you need to invert it. A straight E (F#) 7 there works better to my ears.

I've seen that chart JBMando, IMHO it sounds too choppy chordy like the chords in "lean on me" and doesn't flow on the guitar like the good ole' A/C#. But to each his own... I think as long as you give 'em the F#7 with the A# in the bass, you've set up nicely for the ending.

Yes, the music definitely has the 3rd in the bass on that F#7 chord, but it doesn't lay on the guitar very well. As to the A/C# vs. C#m, I agree, guitarically speaking, but it's a C#m on the record.

the C#minor doesn't lay on guitar well, the F#7 with the 3rd in the bass (I feel) isn't too hard of a grip.

Furthermore, on the pause, the acoustic arpeggiates: A# C# F# (xxx322), so I'd voice it 242322. Also, I would not use a capo on this one.

It might just be me, but I think the descending bassline just kinda needs to be there..
I'm glad you brought up the arpeggio, because that could be acheived with the capo being at the 2nd fret if you so desire...

1------------0----- F#
2----------0------- C#
3--------1--------- A#
4------2----------- or leave this string open and emphasize the b7
5-----------------
6---4--------------

I think the OP can take it from here, where's the latest CV thread?

Dang you guys are GREAT.....it IS an F#7! I just played it, that works...with the bass playing a Bb....fantastic. Thanks so much.

[music theory nit] For consistency, it's called A# when the chord is F#7.[/picked]:cool:

Thanks Ken. I'm always kind of half-afraid to put up a set of changes with you music monsters on the same forum. See, I even screwed up that funk 9th GE Smith was playing?

I played 'your' 9th chord a few times last night on a gig. There was a second guitar player and no keyboard player - that voicing helped to fill out the changes sometimes.

All of us learn something a little different than the pack occasionally. For example: I've always played "the Weight" in Bb with a Bb/D as the second change - that's the Aretha Franklin version. It was here at the tdpri where I learned it was really Dm (iii) chord ... and in A. For whatever reason I'd only ever played that song with chick vocalists and they always did the Aretha version - ?
