...or is it a LP special? anyway, i checked out mahavisnu orchestra live at montreu in 1984 (on netflix) and about 5-10 minutes into the jam, he pulls this out:

to see the premier jazz fusion guy in the world throwing down some blues licks on a punk rock guitar is tres cool, IMHO. and now i got the hots for a white double cut lp junior.

BTW, the rest of the show he is playing what i believe is a roland guitar synthesizer. this is a whole lot tamer version of MO than they were ten or so yrs earlier.

PS: i tried to do the embed thing and couldn't make it work.

Shri Chinmoy! I use to catch Johnny both at Boston and Providence when the MO toured in the '70s. I've gone to shows from the last 3 or 4 tours and he's still quite enjoyable, now more into more expressive bends and feel rather than speed demon playing. His new hookup, guitar and amp, sound as good or better than his Gibson/Marshall rig.W Chic Corea in Philly he/they were fantastic. He had a acoustic bass player that seemed superhuman, but not the guy on the CD. The size of a NFL lineman.Easily a level above even Stanley Clark or the French 20 year old he had on Fender bass.Any a idea who he might have been? Thanks for the link .

Mate, that was nasty! I quite like Mahavishnu Orchestra, but that was definitely pushing my patience. Quite a lot of background noise from that guitar everytime he isn't playing as well.

It's a double cut LP special he plays.

But if you think it's amazing that a player from such stature could do this using what you yourself refer to as a "punk rock guitar", you might find it surprising that Steve Howe used a Fifties Junior with Yes during their "Topographic ocean tour."
Here you go, listen to him pulling all that sound from a one pickup guitar.

Cool vid. Thanks for posting. I have a love hate relationship with my special. Sometimes it sounds great to me, sometimes not. I can't figure it out. I always dig John McLaughlin though.
