Brushed metal black finish?

So I know this might sound a bit akward but as inspiration for my next guitar I am using my laptop which has a brushed black umber metal finish to it, and I wanted to somehow achieve the same with my guitar with out building it out of metal...anyone have any ideas?

When I used to paint Space Marines (ahem) a looong time ago... We would under coat in black and then lightly load a brush with silver/grey and go over it EXTREEEMLY lightly just to pick out the slightly raised parts. Look at the guns on these guys.

If you could give the guitar the right texture and you have a very steady hand, you could achieve something similar? It wouldn't be easy but it's the only way I can think of.

I was thinking maybe if I paint a matte black (If i can mettalic? ) finish and then brushing it and maybe clear coating over that?

Maybe covering the guitar in a vinyl would work? or would that kill the tone?

there are quite a few Spray paint aswell as modelers paints that will dry to a brushed metal effect

Yeah I know what you're going for it's just very hard to achieve.

My old ipod was scratched to death on the back so I took a scrubbing pad to it and it gave a very nice brushed effect.

Maybe if you put a thin layer of silver over black, then lightly sanded all in one direction to get the same effect. Very hard to get it anywhere near even enough though.

I know some people might think I'm crazy and might not see the guitar that I do in the laptop (I own one just like it) but there is a guitar hiding in those soft routed edges with that nice chrome trim....I see the stary night in there!

I like that! Would I have to clear it after? So far I'm finding this to be the best answer, I'd have to try it on some spare wood first

Well tbh it would not look anywhere near as good as your laptop. I think vinyl is a better way to go.

But even that will still look like a sticker. I think you may be asking too much unless you actually make the guitar out of metal.

It just won't have the same feel of cool quality that your laptop has. It's a nice dream though.

i think if you did a coat of matt black then a thin coat of this then lightly (very lighlty) sand it may work

I'm just spit-balling here but...

You can buy aluminum tape in about 3" widths, try getting a test piece of wood and grain-fill it then sand smooth, then put the aluminum tape on it. Then get some #0000 steel wool and lightly rub it in straight lines so it makes a brushed pattern. Then shoot it with some transparent black varnish.

It might just work, the only problem I see is hiding the seams and/or getting the right paint so it doesn't flake off the aluminum.

You could try the same technique with a wide sheet of aluminum foil instead of the tape, but you'd have to stick it to the wood somehow.

2) Rub with powdered aliminium
3) Spray with CLEAR MATT (Krylon) Let dry again....
Repeat steps 2 and 3, as desire

Those sound like good ideas.

Maybe there is some kind of specialty brush you could buy for this sort of thing?
