Two inputs, one output

I'd like to have a pedal with two inputs, one output, so that I can toggle back and forth between my lap steel & electric guitar.

I play sitting, so the chords won't get tangled.

Think I'll need a DPDT switch, but I've never built anything like this.

Diagram suggestions?

Thanks -
C

Look up A/B/Y pedal wiring.

That's essenitally what you're after, but they are usually used the other way around (one in, two outs). Your signal won't know the difference though, unless you're planning on putting any active electronics in there.

Hadn't thought about that - just building the same schematic I keep finding for one guitar/two amps, and plug in two guitars/one amp.

For that application you probably just want A/B without the "Y." You just can't plug two guitars into a Y cord going into the same amp because the two guitars will load each other and the impedance gets kerflooey so you would need some sort of active buffer. BUT if you're just doing one instrument at a time, you can use a passive A/B box.

The better designs short out the other jack but it might not be necessary for your application - you can probably get away with using a discarded SPDT stomp switch from some pedal that's been upgraded to true-bypass with a DPDT. You might get popping noises when switching, though.

Thanks, Viz. You pretty much nailed what I'm thinking.

I found a simple schematic online, going with a DPDT stomp switch from AllParts. Definitely just one instrument at a time, a simple box w/no LEDS or anything.

Definitely not messing around with Y cord nonsense.
