JOYO Overdrives... Need some opinons.

Hey Guys!

So my pedalboard is going through a major (and hopefully final) rebuild/design.

I haven't bought any new effects for ages and i'm happy with the ones i have which are Modtone Boost -> Ibanez Flanger reissue -> Crossfire(belcat, cheap) delay (set to short slapback) -> Boss digital delay (longer delays) -> Behringer Reverb -> Jamman -> Pitchblack....

But i'm lacking an overdrive. I've been using the channels on my AD30, but sometimes it would be nice to have an overdrive (Especially when looping a clean rhythm with the jamman) The clean boost i can kinda use, but it gets a little harsh pushed way up...

Haven't got much spare cash, and i'm not really into boutique stuff (especially for a gig rig) and i've heard some good things about the JOYO stuff. Youtube video's sound good to me. I run a bypass box on my pedal board so transparency/true bypass isn't that important.

But i can't decide whether to go the Vintage or Ultimate overdrives.
Any advice? Thoughts?

Cheers!

The vintage overdrive is a good TS808 copy. Now whether a TS pedal will suit your needs and amp, I dont know.

Vintage overdrive is a tubescreamer, the ultimate drive is an OCD clone. The latter has a lot of gain on tap, and to my ears is a really good, if a bit generic, Marshally distortion. Fairly even frequency response, maybe even a tad bassy. I really like it.

I'm not a tubescreamer guy so not much to say about the vintage overdrive, but IMO the two best Joyo overdrives are the Ultimate OD and the new Sweet Baby which is allegedly a Mad Professor Sweet Honey clone. I really like it for low to medium gain, and it does the pick sensitivity/clean-up thing very well, it adds a tad of brightness. My advice is check the sweet baby out too.

I have both UD and Sweet Baby...just LOVE the Sweet Baby! UD is just way too much gain for my needs, at least for what I'm playing right now, but more time spent may let me dial in some lower gain usable sounds. The SB w/ my single coils really adds just a little hair w/ the gain dimed. And sounds great! Just what I was looking for....hope that helps.

I've been wanting a TS808 for a long time. Got the Vintage OD and it's exactly what I wanted.

The UD is a classic! But I recently replaced mine with the Crunch distortion for distortion duties. I modded mine with a 3-way switch for some clipping diode options[green 5mm leds/nothing/assymetrical silicone diodes],a paint job,new knobs and most importantly moved the trim pot so its adjustable by removing the bottom plate. This trimmer has a huge impact on the tone of the pedal,so adjusting it to your rig is mandatory.
Also beefed up the wiring to the footswitch.
Love my Joyo tremolo and compressor too!

I have the UD and while it does sound great, it sems to have a bit too much low end for my likeing.....I tend to use the modelled version in my RP 1000 which doesn't have the low end the joyo does.

I am very keen to get the TS clone and the sweet baby sounds pretty interesting after the above comments...

Vintage. Simple. It sounds better also IMO

I have the sweet baby and the ultimate drives. With both you can really cover a lot of ground. $100-ish. Done.

Hmmm well now i think i'm more indecisive than ever! Hmmm

I think that's the thing, I don't really know if i want a TS808 sound or not... I don't know what overdrive sound i want! haha

I know what i don't want, chainsaw gain. Oranges can get a little chainsawy when pushing the gain.

Rich warm rock/blues tones would be nice. Think Oasis rock sounds. Its to sit infront of an Orange AD30...
The sweet baby sounds interesting as well, the pick attack sensitivity kind of interests me too.

So now i have three i can't decide on... LOL
Too bad nowhere local has some, that would be sweet..

I'm very pleased with my Joyo pedals and the UD is a great one.
OK it is quite bassy, but I have an Owen Axe Juice for the TS type od. It is perhaps not as effective at low volume or as responsive to boost as the Owen, but at gigs for a Marshall type boost it can't be beat - especially for the money!
I gig quite regularly and the Joyo pedals have all been reliable so far.

I think i'm going to go with the ultimate drive... Seems to be a little less brittle to my ears. Will report back when i get one :) Cheers guys!
