twangjeff June 22nd, 2012, 09:58 AM I thought this would be a good place to pose this question since I know that we have a lot of pedal-heads here. I am looking for a basic delay that I can use for slap back and medium length delays. I don't plan on using it a ton, but I do have a few tunes that require that spaced out steel guitar type of sound. It seems like all of the delay pedals out there are very expensive, and to be honest, I can't see myself spending $2-300 on something that I am just going to use here and there. Are there any decent options out there for around $100?
Jalpow June 22nd, 2012, 10:21 AM My joyo digital delay has been doing me fine. Goes for around $50-60 bucks, the repeats are fairly warm and the build quality seems decent. Check 'em out. Joyo has gained a pretty good reputation here.
For versatility and a lot more features (toneprint, strum-tempo) you should check out the TC Flashback which goes for $170 or so on ebay.
Lee Harvey June 22nd, 2012, 10:22 AM Jet city anolog delay.. $79.00
mal paso June 22nd, 2012, 10:26 AM Boss DD-3. Tried and true. Good sound, versatile, etc.
Check out the Used Gear section at Guitarcenter.com. I'm sure you could find a used one for under $100
aunchaki June 22nd, 2012, 10:34 AM I'm liking my Behringer VD400 Vintage Delay--an all-analog clone of the old BOSS DM-3. The Behringer stuff is housed in plastic cases, but their clones of classic pedals from the past get some love here and elsewhere (plus a fair bit of scorn). For $24 I'm delighted with mine and it's been plenty sturdy enough.
Another of the Behringer pedals is a clone of the Line6 Echo Park. They also clone the BOSS DD-3 and DD-5. All for pretty cheap. Here's a guide to the Behringer pedals (http://thetoneking.com/wp/behringer-stomp-box-cross-comparison-chart/).
From MF you can get the Rogue Analog Delay pretty cheaply (occasionally it's the Stupid Deal of the Day for $30). I have both and prefer the Behringer (warmer repeats).
stephenyi June 22nd, 2012, 10:47 AM +1 on the Boss DD-3 (or a used DD-5, DD-6, or DD-7). You can also pick up a Dunlop carbon copy for around $100 used.
schenkadere June 22nd, 2012, 10:50 AM I'd vote for the Rogue Analog Delay regularly $49.99...
or the Dano FAB 600ms delay for $24.99...both at MF
twangjeff June 22nd, 2012, 10:54 AM Thanks everyone for all of the great responses. I hadn't thought to search through GC's used section, that is a great idea. Especially for Boss pedals since there is pretty much nothing that can go wrong with them!
As a side note, does anyone here have any experience with the old purple Danelectro Dan Echo? It seems like I used to see them pretty often...

Big John Studd June 22nd, 2012, 11:23 AM I use this one, and it nails the slap-back delay if you ask me. Shipped to your door for $35. It does not seem to be as durable as say a Boss stomper, but I haven't had any reliability issues at gigs. I don't ever use it (or anything) for longer delays.

honeycreek June 22nd, 2012, 12:47 PM I really try to dislike my Digitech Digi-Delay but I keep going back to it. I've put other things on my board but always seem to go back. I consistently pick it over the other options I have (including the Rogue "Analog Delay" and Joyo Analog Delay that are mentioned here).
It really comes down to what you want out of a delay and how much you want to spend. I bought my Digi-Delay used but it is $100 new. If I had to replace the Digi-Delay, I would probably buy the Hardwire Delay/Looper DL-8 but it runs $150 new.
bigmuff113 June 22nd, 2012, 12:52 PM EHX Memory Toy/Memory Boy. Or if you like Digital #1 Echo. Used regularly go under $100
Chiogtr4x June 22nd, 2012, 01:55 PM Boss DD-3. Tried and true. Good sound, versatile, etc.
Check out the Used Gear section at Guitarcenter.com. I'm sure you could find a used one for under $100
Going on 12 years with my DD-3 - many, many gigs!
There are cheaper out there but IMO this is a $100 expense you won't regret- rock solid performance, build, and reliability
brucefan12 June 22nd, 2012, 02:07 PM Another vote for the DD-3, I use it for exactly the same purpose and it works great!
jakey333 June 23rd, 2012, 06:29 AM +1 on the Boss DD-3 (or a used DD-5, DD-6, or DD-7). You can also pick up a Dunlop carbon copy for around $100 used.
Another + 1 on this, save I'd not consider the DD5 onwards- MIJ DD2 or DD3 is where it is at.
Carbon Copy superb too.
A TRex Replica is great and may just fit into your budget.
birv2 June 23rd, 2012, 10:29 AM If you want to go really cheap, take a look at the Dano PB&J. Great little pedal!
Mission June 24th, 2012, 09:26 AM MF has the Rogue Analog Delay for $29.99 today. Not great but can't beat the price.
DannyBigShots June 24th, 2012, 09:37 AM +1 for the dano
idealguitars June 24th, 2012, 10:27 AM C-MODS Deeelay.
JaysRiff June 24th, 2012, 05:34 PM the boss DD-3 is a good pedal but i hate how sterile & dry it sounds for slapback
ddhr June 24th, 2012, 05:46 PM Take a look at the Hardwire DL8. It has several types of delay and is a looper as well. I bought mine for $100 used.
KC June 24th, 2012, 05:53 PM used Malekko 616 if you can find one. really a musical-sounding delay. hours of fun in a small box.
Chiogtr4x June 24th, 2012, 07:19 PM the boss DD-3 is a good pedal but i hate how sterile & dry it sounds for slapback
Never would think of my sound with the DD-3 as sounding like this-I play Fender amps w/ Reverb a little mild OD to warm things up with the delay. and I use it specifically for rockabilly, classic country and '50's Elvis songs-I think I get a very warm sound with it & everything just pops with it!
mal paso June 24th, 2012, 07:35 PM DD-3 rules.
For a bit extra, the AquaPuss is perfect for slapback
GKrakin June 24th, 2012, 08:30 PM Visual Sound Axle Grease. Absolutely gorgeous analog sound for not a lot of green.
Pajama June 25th, 2012, 05:05 AM The original Tech 21 Boost Delay is pretty awesome. Might be worth checking out used.

RomanS June 25th, 2012, 05:23 AM I use the Marshall Echohead, the tape delay setting adds a bit of warble to the repeats that makes things interesting, and it also does a great slapback echo.
The Artec SE-ADL is also good for slapback, if you prefer a brighter (but not digital sounding) type of repeat (personally, for slapback I sometimes find the repeats on "real" analog delays too dark/muddy, I do like to hear a crisp repeated note, not a muddy one that kind of merges with the original note...)
newmachine June 25th, 2012, 06:09 AM no love for Ibanez DE-7?
limbe June 25th, 2012, 06:14 AM DD-3.(Or 5 and7 )
Mike Eskimo June 25th, 2012, 08:26 AM TC Electronics Flashback for $119 shipped.
It will do everything all the other pedals mentioned do plus more.
Oh - and it's got a basic looper.
Studioguy57 June 27th, 2012, 02:56 PM +1 on TC stuff:
TC Nova Delay ND-1 used or any TC delay's are great. TC Nova Repeater is also very good gen around $99 . TC Flashback is good.
twangjeff June 27th, 2012, 03:04 PM Thanks everyone for the input. I have plenty of research to do!
soulman969 June 27th, 2012, 03:05 PM Lot's of good suggestion but based on what you're looking for I'll give you another inexpensive enough to buy another pedal or two for the $100.
I use one for exactly what you describe your needs to be. I think this says it all. This exactly what you get for your money. Don't let the plastic housing worry you. It's a lot sturdier than you might imagine.
Simple but effective Delay, Time, and Repeat controls make it easy to find the sound you seek.

mngsp June 27th, 2012, 03:18 PM I use the Rogue Analog Delay and it does everything I ask it to do at a darn fair price.
Lizard June 27th, 2012, 04:16 PM TwangJeff - I regularly use a Dan Echo and love it. A bunch of options and a great sound.
mike257 June 27th, 2012, 07:42 PM If you can pick one up used in your budget, take a look at the EHX Deluxe Memory Boy - I love mine, great analog sound and tap tempo, plus tons of other features. I think it sounds great and is pretty flexible.
Also have the Joyo Digital Delay on my board, which is a cool pedal in its on right and not to be sniffed at for the price, a great buy!
hwy145 June 28th, 2012, 07:52 AM I never really understood when people refer to a pedal as organic. That is, until I purchased in aqua puss and a carbon copy. The aqua puss had what I consider digital artifacts. The carbon copy had a more natural "analog" sound to it. I've heard it described as dark too, but I don't hear that. Granted, I only use it for a little echo when playing country, but it works perfectly!
fuzzbox June 28th, 2012, 07:59 AM Carbon copy has the mojo.
bossking7 June 28th, 2012, 09:28 AM You can also pick up a Dunlop carbon copy for around $100 used.
