hey everyone, im still doing some research on finishing 2 bodies i cut...would love to go out & by a gun & comp but i have a small town house with no storage.I was thinking rattle cans but now someone at an auto body supply shop told me about these
http://www.homedepot.com/Preval/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ7vb/R-202533738/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&storeId=10051
im seeing mixed reviews on them...i really want to use urathane since it has way more colors & i can use a cataliyzed clear & truthfully i own guitars with nitro & poly & dont hear any differance in tone when I take them to gigs....
Just wondering if I can get some reviews on this before i spend any money....
Thanks,
-Mark

I am no expert and I know others on the TDPRI have used them. I used them for spraying sparkles (automotive sparkles) onto a body (since I do not own a compressor/gun setup). It took some trial and error to get it right. I had to ensure the flakes were not to large to clog the head. I found that, even after thoroughly cleaning the head unit with lacquer thinner, that if I let it sit overnight the head would clog. That probably has something to do with using flakes as well. It seemed the only DIY solution short of buying a compressor rig. I used Deft brushing lacquer and lacquer thinner - mixed it about 50 - 50. Seemed to get the flakes onto the guitar.
I have not tried it for just spraying clear/tinted lacquer. I have read on this forum that it sprays in a circular/oval pattern - not a fan pattern.
For the cost of a head and bottle - around $7 - $8 where I am you could use one and see how it works.

You could get into a perfectly usable gun and compressor rig from Harbor Freight for about $75. Get yourself the HVLP detail spray gun (usually on sale for about $13), an inexpensive hose (~$10) and a 3 gallon pancake compressor (almost always coupons for $40) and then the appropriate compressor fittings. I use a setup with the HF hose and gun with a 2 gallon cheapo compressor and it lays down smoother than any aerosol or similar (even better than my turbine driven HVLP unit). Total storage space is about 1.5' cubed. It will pay for itself over the course of 2-3 guitars, especially since I experience close to 0 overspray and the small material cup allows you to use every tiny bit of finish you put in it.

I heard many on this forum state that a pancake compressor is not powerful enough to have sustained pressure for spraying.
Ripthorn - BTW - where in Syracuse are you? Lived in that area for a while.

I use Preval sprayers a lot for doing shellac sealer coats but I find them to spatter a bit and thats not good for colour or clear coats.

Most compressors have adjustment screws inside the pressure switch cover to set the cut in and cut out pressure if yours doesn't you can get a replacement that does.. Obviously if it cuts in at 25 and off at 110 PSI it won't work well since it will never catch up... something like 85<>110 PSi should give more than enough but it will run constantly and the cheap motors not rated for continuous duty won't like a steady diet of that.... bump the cut in a little at a time till your happy...
