Sw0rdfish June 18th, 2012, 04:35 PM Little depressed it took me soo long to stumble onto this guy's music. Not going to lie I did initially dismiss him simply because i confused his name for Bryan Adams.

kylejf90 June 18th, 2012, 04:38 PM Ryan is fantastic, he has a record for every mood! if you wanna go for a drive, then dig into ashes and fire. of you wanna wreck your house then put on rock and roll.
WaylonFan76 June 18th, 2012, 04:41 PM IMO, Ryan Adams is one of the great singer-songwriters of our time. My favorite RA record is of course Heartbreaker, Gold is very good as well. Cold Roses has some very good moments. Don't forget to check out his albums with Whiskeytown. Have fun !
adjason June 18th, 2012, 04:44 PM Oh yeah. In the mid 90's I felt fortunate to have discovered his music. I actually like rock and roll the best.
winny pooh June 18th, 2012, 04:48 PM My favourite "solo" albums are Heartbreakers and Love is hell, pretty different.
The best "band albums" are cold roses and Jacksonville city nights.
WaylonFan76 June 18th, 2012, 05:02 PM My favourite "solo" albums are Heartbreakers and Love is hell, pretty different.
The best "band albums" are cold roses and Jacksonville city nights.
Difference of opinion. Jacksonville City Nights is kinda "meh" for me. Not his best IMHO. Gold is pretty hard to beat for a band feel, I think. Actually, some of his best albums were not released. The Suicide Handbook, 48 Hours and the Swedish Sessions have some of his best songs, I think. Whiskeytown's Pneumonia is great, IMHO.
paulvcarter June 18th, 2012, 05:12 PM Ryan is great, I only found him in 2008 at a benefit concert for Arthur Love at Beacon Theatre in NYC.
I give you another - in case you missed him, amazing player - Davy Knowles. I saw Davy play at a Rory Gallagher benefit 2 yrs ago - amazing player, he nailed Million Miles away
mal paso June 18th, 2012, 05:19 PM Caitlin Cary(ex-Whiskeytown) and Thad Cockrell put out a real good album a few years ago called Begonias. Nice, old school country sound.
As for Ryan Adams, I liked Heartbreaker when it came out
Scantron08 June 18th, 2012, 05:28 PM I did initially dismiss him simply because i confused his name for Bryan Adams.
Don't let him hear you say that. Huge pet peeve. He'll walk out in the middle of a show.
I hear he's a huge jerk, but I guess it's one of those "love the art, not the artist" situations. I dig his stuff, and have since Strangers Almanac.
scrapyardblue June 18th, 2012, 05:35 PM Don't let him hear you say that. Huge pet peeve. He'll walk out in the middle of a show.
True, and there used to be a smart A in just about every crowd that empowered themselves to see if he'd actually do it.
mal paso June 18th, 2012, 05:39 PM Aww, poor Ryan Adams:razz:
kylejf90 June 18th, 2012, 05:53 PM ive heard that the bryan adams thing was taken out of context. i watched an interview with ryan a while ago, and he said that the guy had been yelling things the entire show and was drunk and being a general downer. so ryan gave him some money and asked him to leave, and then the media latched onto it and made him look like a total jerk.
WaylonFan76 June 18th, 2012, 06:21 PM I hear he's a huge jerk,
Well, I actually met Ryan around the time Heartbreaker came out and got to hang out with him a few times after that and he is a really nice guy. He does let the audience get the best of him sometimes. Part of who he is, I guess.
niilolainen June 18th, 2012, 07:01 PM He's a fine songwriter. One of the best.
Big_Bend June 18th, 2012, 09:54 PM Love Ryan Adams, another guy I've recently (finally) discovered. A couple of my favorites of his...
16 Days
DRJZzuPU7T8
Rescue Blues
BGBzYxwtyQs
Great songs, amazing...
Joe Baggadonitz June 19th, 2012, 08:46 AM I don't know what's more discouraging, playing to a crowd who has no idea who Ryan Adams is or playing to a crowd that thinks you said Bryan Adams and the resulting disappointment when it's not.
blowtorch June 19th, 2012, 08:56 AM dunno if it's true or not but i've heard that ryan adams is not his real name, he changed it to that. if that is true, well, he's only got himself to blame for the confusion.
guy can write a song, that's for sure. i do wish he'd rock more often , like on "shakedown on 9th st"
greggorypeccary June 19th, 2012, 10:08 AM New to Ryan Adams?
http://archive.org/details/RyanAdams
Enjoy!
pondcaster June 19th, 2012, 10:19 AM Gotta love some early '00s Ryan. Though I tend to like Whiskeytown more, really like Ryan's period of Heartbreaker, Gold, Demolition.
Also really like some of the Cardinals work especially Cold Roses.
Seen him a few times live, sorta hit or miss...? Still a talent, no doubt.
Roku June 19th, 2012, 10:29 AM Easy Tiger is the must have Adams album in my opinion. But lots and lots of good Ryan Adams out there!!!
blowtorch June 19th, 2012, 10:32 AM Ryan Adams and Bryan Adams share a birthday, oddly enough
WaylonFan76 June 19th, 2012, 10:42 AM Ryan's his middle name. His first name is David.
blowtorch June 19th, 2012, 10:45 AM right, he could've gone as Dave David or Davey Adams, and avoided the whole Ryan/Bryan thing.
jonnyfez June 19th, 2012, 10:47 AM Whiskeytown's Houses on the Hill has been stuck in my head for a month now.
That song kills me.
lewis June 19th, 2012, 11:19 AM Have heard his name for years, stumbled across his "Live on Letterman" performance, now I'm a fan.
http://www.cbs.com/late_night/liveonletterman/ryan_adams/video/
ToneShark June 19th, 2012, 12:16 PM He's always been one of my favorites. I have most of his good stuff on vinyl, and those are some of the records I listen to the most.
boris bubbanov June 19th, 2012, 12:34 PM Well, I actually met Ryan around the time Heartbreaker came out and got to hang out with him a few times after that and he is a really nice guy. He does let the audience get the best of him sometimes. Part of who he is, I guess.
I hear that.
I think there are guys who don't bring a lot to the table, and they had better be on their best behavior or I won't bother with them.
But Ryan Adams is different. He could be the standout, the Neil Young of his age group, and people who think it is great to torment him, well I wish them lots of real bad luck. Any antics, I would gladly tolerate because he's that remarkable. He's worth it.
Yes, I know, some people were hoping to see Bryan Adams and they got drunk and mad and yelled they wanted him instead. Screw them. The best thing Bryan Adams could do to help modern music, is to retire and let people figure out that you go and see Ryan Adams or you stay home.
I don't think it is a coincidence that people wanting to see Ryan Adams don't accidentally get tickets to see Bryan Adams, only the other way around. I wonder why this is?
I think Bryan Adams' career was deemed basically over when Ryan came along. For what it is worth, I suspect a lot of the post Ryan "excitement" about Bryan was totally inadvertent - just a sort of "sympathetic response" or resonance we sometimes see when there's a new name and the names get mixed up. I saw some of this when Mission of Burma member Roger Miller came along and it rekindled some interest in Roger Miller of "Dang Me" fame. Beck Hansen got jammed between Jeff Beck (who we'd often referred to just as Beck) and the Hanson Brothers and maybe should've coined something new I suggest. I've always loved The Associates (Rankine/Mackenzie) and a well meaning relative sent me an Association album (and now they suck more than ever) and names have to be sweated no question. There's other examples but I can't recall them right now.
I remember as a kid, some old man telling me "John Lenin" of the Beatles was Russian butcher, anarchist and killer of babies. If you can't get names right because you can't comprehend much, leave the show attendance for those who are there to get it right.
boris bubbanov June 19th, 2012, 01:50 PM right, he could've gone as Dave David or Davey Adams, and avoided the whole Ryan/Bryan thing.
Huh?
David is the non name, the default name when a guy's parents blanked out.
Seven of the 14 guys I worked with on a UPS crew were named David, and a couple nights there were 8 Davids on that crew.
Asking people to use the name David to identify themselves is a serious issue, if you ask me. Maybe for kids born in 2010, but not this guy's time and certainly not mine.
Dave David sounds like Yada yada yada. Bad mistake.
blowtorch June 19th, 2012, 01:54 PM boris, I'd meant Dave Adams, Davey Adams or David Adams
mal paso June 19th, 2012, 01:55 PM How 'bout Dav Adams? That sounds kinda cool
boris bubbanov June 19th, 2012, 02:00 PM boris, I'd meant Dave Adams, Davey Adams or David Adams
Davy Davy is the closest thing, which could work for some sorts of players. David Ryan might have worked.
Adams is such a ubiquitous name, the first name needs to be distinctive (and frankly Bryan isn't distinctive enough). These names like Michael Jones, Jim Williams, Joseph Smith; well, if you're a solitary artist, these names are very problematic. From an image standpoint.
If you have an unusual last name, then you can use even the most common first name. Otherwise, you won't stay remembered and you'll go invisible way before your time.
It may have been great fortune, that Davy Jones of the Monkees had already hit when David Jones was deciding what name to use. Bowie was just so evocative - I think Bowie might have flopped under David Jones.
blowtorch June 19th, 2012, 02:02 PM there's nothing special about the name "Ryan", to my mind.
boris bubbanov June 19th, 2012, 02:07 PM there's nothing special about the name "Ryan", to my mind.
Yeah. It isn't really the best, either.
fretbuzzard June 19th, 2012, 02:10 PM Whiskeytown's Houses on the Hill has been stuck in my head for a month now.
That song kills me.
Love that tune. For my part I'll parrot some critics in saying that he is a very talented (and prolific) songwriter who is badly in need of a good editor. At his best, though, there are few better IMHO.
bigben55 June 19th, 2012, 02:10 PM Whiskeytown's Houses on the Hill has been stuck in my head for a month now.
That song kills me.
That, the aforementioned 16 Days, and Inn Town are just killer tunes.
Maxwell Street June 19th, 2012, 02:16 PM I give you another - in case you missed him, amazing player - Davy Knowles.
I saw Davy Knowles open for Jeff Beck a couple years ago in a small club in Chicago, held a bunch of Beck fans attention with just a resonator...
e44crowe June 19th, 2012, 02:28 PM I am a huge fan of all his group and solo work.
DRA is one of those artists i really wish people would pay more attention to.
He gets rapped as "that unstable/a**hole guy" which he may be... we aren't friends.
His music though... WOW... such beauty.
greggorypeccary June 19th, 2012, 02:56 PM Love that tune. For my part I'll parrot some critics in saying that he is a very talented (and prolific) songwriter who is badly in need of a good editor. At his best, though, there are few better IMHO.
Whenever I hear that, I always counter with the fact that your favorite songs or albums may not be someone else's. I'm glad he puts it all out there.
And as it is, he still made a half dozen or so albums worth of material in the late 90's/early 2000's that were never officially released. There's some great stuff there too!

Yep, I had heard him a few months back on Outlaw Country SiriusXM talk about that. That's a shame.
boris bubbanov June 20th, 2012, 01:03 AM I'm glad he finally understands what was hitting him, and is doing right to cope with it, and stay as healthy as he can. That's good news.
mnutz June 20th, 2012, 03:42 AM I've really enjoyed all of Ryan's work since the Whiskeytown days. Definately one of the best songwriters of this century.
MontyPY June 24th, 2012, 02:06 AM I'll echo with Heartbreaker being my favorite Adams record.
Also, I ran across an interview on youtube where he explains a lot of the issues this thread mentioned. Mainly him being a jerk and the ear troubles. Was a good watch.
