Our stage floor is oak. I have seen some bands put down area rugs. I always thought that this was for comfort but I was thinking the other day that this might have a positive affect of damping sound reflections from amps and monitors. It might make the stage a little quieter. Has anyone ever taken a hard floor surface and covered it with rugs or carpeting? What was the effect?

Our entire worship center is carpeted. The director is pretty set on reduced stage noise. We've used in-ear monitors for years, the speakers are all well in front and to the sides of the stage and the drums are electronic. If we put the singers remotely in another room, there would be no sound at all on stage.

I occasionally bring a 4x6 rug to put my amp (and myself) on. I think it sounds great. Especially if we have a gig in a weird place or on a cement or tile floor. It does change the sound slightly.

Do you think the entire stage would need to be carpeted in order to have good effect, or just perhaps individual rugs under/in front of amps & monitors?

I bring a nice carpet sample in the shape of a doormat with me to stand on. I find standing on it leaves me less fatigued at the end of a long night.

Doesn't it also ground you as well? So as not to zap yourself if you are barefoot or the wiring is hanky? E.g. Keith Richards at Memorial Auditorium...

Even if you put down a few Rugs it will make a difference in the sound. Sound reflection can be bright sometimes.
Sometimes too much carpet can kill music. At least you have the option to move things around.

Opposite. The rug could theoretically insulate your feet from making an electrical connection with the ground.

Cool. I'm going to try this. Thanks for the help.

Ours is a bare wood floor - painted black. The reason is dancers. They don't want carpet.

Our drummer recently started putting a rug under his kit. I think it made certainly helps absorb some. The rented room is for banquets and the floor is concrete under thin tile. Highly reflective with windows on two walls.

We have a drum mat but that's more to stop the kit slipping than for sound purposes.
