I had an American Standard back in the 90's but had to sell it while in college. Now over a decade later I really want another. I'll probably be going with a MIM this time, new vs used is a tough decision. I have a Martin I love but it's just time to get plugged back in. Lurking the forum for the past few weeks has fueled the addiction.

Welcome!
Both are great choices for gigging musicians or bedroom players. My preference is to go used, particularly MIM Standards from the early 2000s. Those years have alnico pickups, vintage frets and (IMO) a "just right" amount of gloss to the back of the neck. At some point before then bridges were toploaders and around 2006 the pickups were changed to ceramics (neither of which are necessarily a bad thing, just different than what many Tele players expect).
My favorite gigs were done with a 2001 MIM Std bought for $215, just like the one Roxin Potvin plays in this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gfnb-7yev9E&feature=youtube_gdata_player).

I sold my tele too and just bought a new one. There is something about the simplicity and beauty of telecasters that makes it something that you simply cannot live without.
