Do you have a router?

Hey, that's a good one.
If you lack a router, do you have access to a drill press and forstner bits, or a good old fashioned hand cranked brace and bits? With either of these you can get the radii at the edges of the bridge pickup cavity properly cut to depth using 7/8" and 5/8" bits (bored to 0.85" deep). Then you can use the same set up to remove most of the potential waste wood from the inside of the cavity, then clean it up with hand chisels. Do a search for the Downs template Rev. E on this site to see the correct dimensions for the hole you're going to excavate. This is entirely doable with hand tools only.

Good luck,
