Vomact June 13th, 2012, 07:14 PM I recently sprung for an Egnater Tweaker 40 112.
Absolutely love the amp.
My problem is finding the 'right' OD\Dist for it. It is defenitely not my Blues Jr.
and my older pedals aren't making it.
I am looking for a smooth fat tone similar to what you hear on Knopflers 'Shangrila' on "5:15 AM" and "Boom Like' That". He has this really smooth fat almost fuzzy tone that I would really like to get onto my board.
I realize some of this is his Komet and definitely some is his hands
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
6ixstring June 13th, 2012, 07:47 PM I'm not familiar with tweaker 40, nor do I remember the Knopfler tone you are referring to. That being said, I have the original Tweaker 15, and this pedal is round and a little fuzzy on the edges. I set it low gain( almost off ). This pedal is a favorite around here for good reasons. This is a Rat 2 circa 1991.
Vomact June 13th, 2012, 07:51 PM Thanks. I'll give it a try.
Doesn't Keely mode these now?
Sean65 June 14th, 2012, 02:34 PM Might be an idea to approach this from a different angle.
Why not get a decent attenuator and get your amp driving nicely. Back off on the guitar volume and hit the string lighter to clean up, and turn up and dig in to rip.
Power amp overdrive sounds great. Just an idea.
CyanideJunkie June 14th, 2012, 02:49 PM The Egnater Tweaker should have a pretty good amount of gain on tap already but if you want more, try goosing it with a BK Butler Tube Driver,

No mod needed

"Competition? send 'em south. If they're gonna drown, put a hose in their mouth..."
I love that stuff, and those guitar tones, too. Amelda is another great one.
I'm trying to think of the pedals that I use for that...
Most stuff is just voiced a little too on the bright side, so they get buzzy. Knopfler's sound does have some hair to it, but it's not out of control.
Your standard fare will not get you there, otherwise it would come to me, quickly.
Wow - I'm going to have to think about this one a bit. It's probably a pair of stacked pedals, and two that I don't have on the board right now...

I'm curious what pedals a pedal peddler has on his pedal board - care to pedal, I mean share?
uriah1 June 15th, 2012, 01:01 PM Wampler estcasty/euphoria?
ftgjr June 16th, 2012, 07:27 AM My favorite dirt box is an MI Effects Crunch Box. It give the right amount of gain, for that Marshall tone but is quiet and sounds good with any pick ups. It's also good for boosting a tube amp into overdrive.

Check out these tables. Cant vouch for the accuracy of this web site but it also suggests it's down to amps being pushed hard and tamed with attenuators.

gwjensen June 18th, 2012, 11:41 AM I think Knopfler has been favoring Les Pauls for most of his solo career. I don't know exactly what guitars he used on Shangrila, but I mostly hear humbucker tones. I saw him in concert a couple of years ago and he played a Les Paul almost exclusivley except for a Dano on one song, a tele on another and a Strat on a couple. I can get pretty close to his tone with my neck bucker tele and the tone rolled down along with some OD from my OCD. I can also get fairly close with a regular tele neck pup, but the bucker works better.
Studioguy57 June 25th, 2012, 02:54 PM Hi,
Tweakers are great amps (I had the 15 combo, 15 head and the Rebel 30) but they can be "dark". I have been through at least 20 overdrives and settled(?) on a Timmy, Wampler Paisley and Euphoria along with other TS types (Vox Ice-9 and Way Huge-Green Rhino (both are <$ sleepers!!).
If I had to choose one, it would be the Euphoria (Ecstacy).
It can do quite a bit and can be open, smooth and crunchy (just like the switch label says!). Regardless of setting, it is a dynamic, smooth great sounding overdrive and in my opinion would be perfect for driving the Tweaker as the tone control will allow you to brighten it up a tad with no ice pick. The Paisley is a bit different but still a consideration as well is the Timmy which is another great all-around dynamic overdrive.
I use a Cabronita or PRS into a Mesa Lone Star Special or Bogner Alchemist. Ecstacy sounds great with either of them.
Keep Pedaling!
artdecade June 25th, 2012, 02:58 PM Proco Rat - stock.
Keep Keeley away from it.
Chiogtr4x June 25th, 2012, 04:17 PM ^^^ Ha! That's the way I felt about my TS-9 ! $60 down the drain (years ago!)

You know, I really love the Keeley Compressor, and I have a Katana Boost that I really like as well. So after using those I sent some of my overdrive pedals in for mods, and was really underwhelmed. I really did prefer the sound of my Boss Blues Driver pre-mod. Oh well... The compressor is still one of the best!

Rat
Again, I think we have the answer right there! You might want to add just a little bit of comp to it, to push things more like Knopfler's tone is.
Speaking of tone, I imagine how Mark sets his tone controls is probably a little different from some guitarists, at least for an overdriven sound. And he could be using speakers that give a combination of a darker sound with a bit of snarl when they are pushed.
Amplify This June 25th, 2012, 07:43 PM Have you thought about the zvex super duper? I have one of those and the wampler hot wired. Zvex is fatter but the wampler is nice because of the distortion along with the od. Running into my 65 bassman with avatar 112 ext or my Mesa 5/50 express I can achieve warm od breakup that is close to the knopfler sound I think you are looking for.
telerocker1988 June 25th, 2012, 11:42 PM Try a Red Llama MkII reissue. Excellent pedal.
Whoa Tele June 26th, 2012, 07:38 AM Most all of Brad Jetters pedals sound smooth to me. You might look at the Gain Stage Red for the Knopfler vibe. Not to get off track with the tone is in the fingers thing but in Mark's case it really applies.
Marcus T June 26th, 2012, 07:47 AM I haven't found anything that beats the Boss BD2. And I'm not really a BOSS guy, but that pedal rocks!
JesterR June 26th, 2012, 07:56 AM I would say, that Wampler Ecstasy just made to do that kind of sound.
Studioguy57 June 27th, 2012, 02:20 PM +1 on the Wampler Euphoria/Ecstacy. Used it again last and it is one very flexible pedal. Best of all it is very dynamic and does NOT thin you tone at all. I also have the Paisley and Timmy now but like the Euphoria better.
