Porter Pickups?

Hi all,

Anyone have experience with Porter Pickups? The sound clips sound great, and I am comparing them against Dave Allen's. Dave's don't necessarily sound as good in recording, but I believe it is more the recording than the pickup. However with no way to really tell for sure, I am asking here.

Both have been very responsive to questions and willing to put together a great set for an HSS Strat (Rosewood neck, and my playing style is country/country-rock along with some classic rock).

I was considering Mike Reilander as well, but I think I'm narrowed down to the other two guys.

Any thoughts?

Thanks very much,
Mike

I know Mr Allen is well respected for his work, especially his strat pickups. Porter pickups I've never heard of I'm afraid...

Thanks AJ. David Allen is very well spoken of on Strat Talk, and quite a nice guy as well, judging by our e-mail exchanges. However I seem to be more pulled by the Porter pickup sound samples. I was just hoping to get some additional feedback. I spoke with Brian this afternoon and get the idea that he'll put together a very nice package of pickups for me, though, so I'm going to go that route. I'll let you know how it works out!

Well, I decided on Brian Porter. He has some great sound samples on his web site, was very laid back and easy to talk to, and came up with some great info on what I need to do so it only has to be done once. He is a bit pricier than the other guys, but not by enough to make me change my mind (cheapest was $140, middle price was about $180, and these were $250). He is also supplying new pots, a good 5-way switch and capacitors for about $20, which is what I would pay if I were buying directly, but he's making it easy buy putting all in the box for, matching up what I'll need with what he's producing.

I will post again when I have these installed, which will probably be about 3 - 4 weeks (it'll take him about a week and a half to get them to me, and then my tech will need a couple of weeks to do all the mods.

Have fun,
Mike

I bought a Standard set (the cheapest of €160,-) 5 months ago for my London City Comet. They sound great. Like Tele pups should sound. Very versatile, colourful, great bass and glass bright with the AlNiCo mellowness.

Bought it 2nd hand on the Dutch (sort of) Ebay, called Marktplaats for €70,-.
