boneyguy June 12th, 2012, 02:46 AM ....or great deal?
A 5125 has turned up at my local music store for $399 with a hardshell case. I think that's a pretty screamin' deal, no? I think they were selling for around $800 or more new. It's the model with the DeArmond 2000 pickups.
One of these guys.
fezz parka June 12th, 2012, 02:48 AM I really like those. I'd do it.
boneyguy June 12th, 2012, 02:52 AM I really like those. I'd do it.
Yeah, I'm leaning in that direction.
Jupiter June 12th, 2012, 03:14 AM That would be cool.
kovachian June 12th, 2012, 03:32 AM The DeArmond Electromatic hollowbodies are light years beyond their generic Gretschbucker counterparts so yes, buy it.
I actually preferred my 5125 over my 6120AM because the slimmer neck fit my smaller hands, but I digress. At any rate, buy that 5125 NOW. Do not procrastinate.
losergeek June 12th, 2012, 08:58 AM Definitely a good deal - I'm always surprised by how much money people try to get for their 5120s and 5122s around here - they've been on the street for was low as 699$ new at some points and lots of people post them used for 650$
paratus June 12th, 2012, 09:24 AM Great deal with the DeArmonds. That will be a sweet sounding guitar.
Good luck!
blowtorch June 12th, 2012, 09:34 AM yep that one is a nobrainer
Prison Rodeo June 12th, 2012, 10:28 AM I'd buy it twice at that price.
charlie chitlin June 12th, 2012, 11:01 AM Yup.
Snap it up.
If you don't love it, flip it for a profit.
I think that's even a later one.
I've played earlier ones with the tension bar Bigsby and the build quality was not so hot.
I couldn't get the one I had to feel good and I can usually make just about any guitar play to my satisfaction. But the SOUND was killer.
I have a pair of those DeArmond 2000's waiting to replace my Gretschbuckers.
boneyguy June 12th, 2012, 11:56 AM I'm hoping it's still there today. I'm going to call when they open and ask them to set it aside for me.
Fingers crossed.
Yup.

The photo I posted is not the actual guitar, just an internet photo I liked.
I can't recall for certain but I'm pretty sure the one I'm looking at has the B7 Bigsby on it with the tension bar.
I have a DeArmond Starfire single cutaway and it came with the DeArmond 2000 p/u's and I didn't like them. I happened to have a cheap pair of GFS New York II pickups and threw those on it and it just came alive. I've had so many comments on how great that guitar sounds. I think it depends on the guitar and what it 'needs' so maybe the Gretsch will be just fine with the DeArmonds. It sounded pretty good at the store. I played it through one of those new outrageously expensive Eric Clapton tweed Tremolux amps. Sounded good.
fezz parka June 12th, 2012, 12:06 PM The Starfire had 2K's. Different pickup, overwound more like a P90.

Okay. I knew there was a 2K but couldn't remember if that's what came on the Starfire. Thanks for the clarification Fezz.
fezz parka June 12th, 2012, 12:32 PM Get that fiddle!
boneyguy June 12th, 2012, 02:15 PM Get that fiddle!
Aaarrrrrggggghhhhhh!!!
Too late. I shoulda acted yesterday. I called the store and someone has already put a deposit on it. Dang!
If that deal goes sour they'll give me a call.
The full story::mrgreen:
The reason I hesitated yesterday was because I was already picking up a new MIM 2 tone burst 50's Classic Tele at the store when I saw the Gretsch so I was kinda focused on the new Tele. But that Gretsch was cool enough (and cheap enough) that it was still grabbing my attention. Even while I was at home playing the new Tele I was still thinking about that Gretsch. I'm such a guitar slut. Friggin' GAS!!!
superbadj June 12th, 2012, 03:46 PM That sucks!
I got my 5125 brand new for $400, but they were usually $800. I think it was just discounted because it was a huge Gretsch event at StreetSounds in Brooklyn. Anyway, that was/is a screaming deal. Don't pass it up next time!
blowtorch June 12th, 2012, 03:50 PM Well, you snooze, you lose. I personally am generally relieved when some guitar I've been fretting about gets sold, that means I don't have to worry about it anymore!

You know I said the same thing almost word for word to someone today about the Gretsch.
peaveycaster June 12th, 2012, 10:56 PM I've got an orange one and love it. Next to my black LP Custom, it's my go-to guitar. Great vibe. That's an excellent price.
kovachian June 13th, 2012, 02:32 AM Here's another chance. (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gretsch-G5125-Electromatic-Hollowbody-with-Bigsby-Intl-Buyers-Welcome-/280891717069?pt=Guitar&hash=item41667375cd#ht_4872wt_754)

^ This has bailed me out more than I deserve on "great deals"....but in this case, I think a good one got away.
Dan R June 15th, 2012, 09:26 PM Boney, you must pull the trigger on the impulse. Better luck next time. A good deal is gone quickly.
acalan June 15th, 2012, 09:41 PM Yeah, you should have went for it. Right then. Better luck next time!
Two Steps June 15th, 2012, 10:39 PM Here's mine! With a custom Setzer guard since I didn't like the stock black.
Mine is very well built and I like the bigsby bar vs the later TOM. Also, the later 5125s had a different bigsby. So I like mine with the right bigsby and bridge !
