Can anyone tell me how the Fender custom shop nocaster three way switching worked. Was it like the original with first postion being neck with fixed rone rolled off, second position neck only with no tone adjustment and the third position being the bridge with the ability to blend the neck using what is now the tone control..
or did they use the early 50's to mid 60's set up with pos. 1 neck, treble cut.
2nd pos. neck with tone control and third position bridge with tone control but no ability to blend pickups...
hope this makes sense
Oh while I'm at it, how were all the 52 reissues wired up?

You are correct! The wiring is as you describe in the Nocaster, and the '52 reissues come with the later '50s, early '60s wiring, but have a kit to rewire to modern if you wish to!

2nd position includes the tone control in the circuit for the neck pup.

On the Nocaster, there is no tone control for any position. The blend works with the bridge pup selected, the middle position is neck pup alone, and the neck position is neck pup with a capacitor that knocks off the highs, and also reduces the volume.

so my other question would be, how did Fender arrive at the tone setting for the 2nd position on the recent nocaster (custom shop) which is just a pre set neck pickup tone.....
would it be possible to copy that tone for a custom build?

With the original Nocaster wiring, since there is no tone control, the neck pup is effectively "straight out" to the jack socket in the middle position....like the bridge pup is on an Esquire in the back switch position.
The "pre-set" front position uses a .05 capacitor.
Edit to add Seymour Duncan schematic.

Yep. Ron is correct.
In position 1 (switch pushed toward the lower bout), it's the bridge pickup with the blend knob gradually rolling in the neck pickup from any combination of 100% bridge, zero neck, to 50% bridge and 50% neck.
