Fixing Bright Z90 Bridge Pickup on MIJ Les Paul

I stuck Harmonic Designs Z90 pickups on a mahogany Les Paul clone made in Japan. These are supposed to be like P90s, only better. The neck pickup sounds great, but the bridge pickup sounds thin. It's like being poked in the ear with a needle.

HD says to use 500K pots, and they have recommended a .02 uF cap. I just ordered 250K pots, because I'm hoping they will help. Is there any hope this will work, or am I living in a fool's paradise? The guitar already has .02 uF caps.

I have read that lowering the pickup can help, but it seems like that makes the bridge considerably quieter than the neck. Also, HD recommends putting the pickup WAY up by the strings.
