NGD!! (Lap Steel!)

Hey, so it's not actually Today that I got it, I bought it last week while on vacation at Elderly Instruments back home in Michigan for the g/f's cousins wedding....

This is my first lap steel, but I'm amazed at how solid this thing actually is....its the Recording King RG-31, I got it for 150 new, and they threw in a free pack of GHS strings and a set of fingerpicks. (such nice people over there! I missed elderly) It has a EMG designed P-90 and just sings. The nut seems to be cut pretty damn well, all the strings are flat across the top, so no weird notes from raised strings, etc. tuners seem to be pretty good too, haven't had to do much with the tuning while playing it. All in all, for under 200 bucks (I bought a shubb tone-bar slide too) it seems to be an amazing deal for a great lap steel at least for steel beginners. I've been playing it non-stop, I should probly go play the tele before she starts to get jealous...... ;) haha. Anyways, thought I'd share, as the next project I'm going to undertake is going to be a lap steel ground up build, seems like its a little easier for first time ground up builders (no cutting fret slots!! :O)

Ok, I'm gonna go play now!

Oh man, this is gonna be a lifelong learning experience for sure!! Haha. My band plays mostly in Eb standard, so for this, I've been playing around mostly in open Eb....until i decide to change it up, then I'm in REAL trouble :P

Welcome to the world of steel! Its a fun instrument!

LoL ... yea ... not having to cut fret slots is a real time saver
Its much easier cutting up 50 - 60 pieces of gold MOP for fret marker inlay or making some custom 3 ply silver / black / silver markers.

All joking aside, building your own is a lot of fun and a great project. As a design / artistic platform, steel guitar offers a bit more freedom and has a rich history to draw from.

Congrats, man!

This is wild. I just reworked my lap steel with a new P90 and a better cap, back to playing it more often.

My jamming buddy just ordered a lap steel for himself - an 8 string Morrell. This has in turn inspired me to dust off my old 8 string build project and finish it off.

There must be something in the water right now......

Mr. Pettingill builds some amazing guitars; I've admired them from the SGF for a while.

I just ordered my steel today! I feel less crazy seeing that other people here are anting to play it too, so thanks. Maybe we can all get together and have a steel party!

Congrats! Haha yeah, we can start a steel band! :P I know what you mean though, a bunch of my friends were like "steel what? Who the hell plays those?" if they only knew how fun it was..... ;)

Ha I didn't even realize you're in Nashville as well... So maybe we could sometime. Or if you need guitar or bass for something let me know! Nashville is lonely when you don't know people. But clearly playing steel guitar will get me tons of friends.

You didn't by any chance order it from elderly did you? Just noticed they had a fender dual pro (I saw your other post) that was available a few days ago when I was looking, but not anymore...
That could be cool though, I'm always open to jams!

No, there was one at... GC... Now nobody get mad, they were really friendly on the phone. Everything went well. One of the pickups is slightly weaker than the other so they had it at a really good price. So sometime in the future I might just get both pickups rewound to get it sounding like new, but they both work so I don't have to until I want to.

I bought one of those and gave it to my nephew. It's a nice, resonant guitar with a real good pickup, for country and blues.

But you knew that! Happy NGD:-)
