Black Nitro Help

I would like to spray an upcoming build in Black Nitro. What would be the best way to go about it ? I see StewMac has black pigment for opaque finishes, but in the past when I have used these, they generally require an undercoat, or I end up spraying way too many coats for the desired look. What would I use for an undercoat for Black Nitro ?

There is also the Transtint option would let the grain show through, alder in this case, but would not be the gloss black I'm envisioning.

I am a but nervous about gloss black. I am not an "old pro" finisher, and I know black is a very difficult finish to get right.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Mike

I guess I should add I am looking to mix my own to use in my spray rig, not rattle cans.

Hello Mike,

You could use Mixol Tint, it works very well, it's concentrated and cheap.

This way you could mix it to an acrylic undercoat, and after that mix it to your nitro brand. Then some clear top coats. No special difficulties here.

Maybe you could also try with black nitro only on a scrap wood piece, you will be surprise how well mixol works, and if you do it with a 50/50 solvent/lacquer mix, it wouldn't necessarely be thicker than the first solution.

Good luck with your project

Use white primer.
