Fretboard overhang at heel

Is there a standard measurement of the amount of fretboard overhang at the heel of a 22 fret tele neck?

A fingerboard with 22 frets is considered the industry "standard" for the last few decades and sports the typical 1/4" overhang off the end of the heel. This has always been the standard spec for our Vintage Modern series.

I haven't taken a pair of calipers to a 22 fret neck, but based on all the fender PDFs that I've scaled to size, it's consistently 0.20".

I use the Stew Mac fret scale and I've always used the 23 fret mark as the cut off for the FB extension. Works fine.

I think you can go 'till it hits the neck PU, but after that you'll have a problem :grin:

The reason behind my question: I bought a tele neck on ebay but the previous owner rounded the heel as if he wanted to install it in a Strat. I want to re-establish the original lines to the heel so I will have to make a straight cut across the neck heel without getting into the fingerboard. Then I will glue on a piece of maple and finally shape it to original specs.

Yep - I've measured the one I had at .2".

If you trim the neck like that, can't you just add your maple and make it match the length of the regular tele neck template? I suppose if the fingerboard is not long enough to cover it, you could add wood to the pocket instead and hide it with a pickguard.

He didn't do a perfect job of rounding the heel. That is why I will have to cut it straight then glue in some maple, cut to the correct length then just round the two corners.

the 87 am. std. strat neck blueprint that's been scanned and posted left that unspecified... with no way to math it out unless you already know the nut to butt length.

odd that they'd leave a critical measurement like heel position out.
