Ok, fan of TBK. Just got a $10 itunes card and been meaning to pick up one of their albums. What album should I buy first? Or should I just buy a selection of songs? If individual songs, what should I get?

What The Black Keys album should I get?tele_pathic June 7th, 2012, 01:12 PM Ok, fan of TBK. Just got a $10 itunes card and been meaning to pick up one of their albums. What album should I buy first? Or should I just buy a selection of songs? If individual songs, what should I get? Leep Dog June 7th, 2012, 01:25 PM My personal favorites are Rubber Factory and Magic Potion, so that's what I recommend. However, it depends on which flavor of Keys you like best. The newer stuff is more polished and has more hooks. I like the much rawer, garage sounds. Magic Potion has the most awesome, fuzzy-riff songs on it. They're all pretty good though. ScottieHotrod June 7th, 2012, 01:29 PM Rubber Factory!!! fretbuzzard June 7th, 2012, 01:32 PM Rubber Factory!!! +1. But I like their newer stuff, too. Six T. Automatic All Hands Against His Own Stack Shot Billy Next Girl Tighten Up Ten Cent Pistol Howlin' for You Some faves that spring to mind. tweeddeluxe June 7th, 2012, 01:46 PM buy the first one jkingma June 7th, 2012, 01:55 PM It's all good. AirBagTester June 7th, 2012, 01:57 PM They're all good! Rubber Factory. Cunningham26 June 7th, 2012, 01:59 PM Rubber factory for blues, brothers if you like their new stuff. Magic potion is what got me hooked, it's a solid combination of old and new Welcome aboard! Jefe June 7th, 2012, 02:05 PM Whatever you do, don't buy their newest one (El Camino). It's not bad per se, but just not a great representation of what they're all about, IMO. bigmuff113 June 7th, 2012, 02:07 PM Whatever you do, don't buy their newest one (El Camino). It's not bad per se, but just not a great representation of what they're all about, IMO. It's a good album, but it's not their best jonnyfez June 7th, 2012, 02:12 PM I'd buy the new one and then Rubber Factory. The new one is the best rock album I've heard in awhile. Little Black Submarines kills. EasyEB June 7th, 2012, 02:12 PM Thickfreakness for sure. rcole_sooner June 7th, 2012, 02:12 PM I'm putting this post in here so I can watch this thread. I grabbed the El Camino album, because it was on sale on Amazon. I need to get some more BK albums. jkingma June 7th, 2012, 02:13 PM El Camino is the best album that's been released by anyone in a couple years IMO. smallstoner June 7th, 2012, 03:32 PM buy the first one Still the best one IMHO. kinkstah June 7th, 2012, 03:41 PM Thickfreakness, then Rubber Factory (err... and maybe that one -don't remember the title but I think it's a EP- stuffed with covers of Jr Kimbrough songs) straightface June 7th, 2012, 09:51 PM Rubber Factory Thickfreakness The Big Come up Magic Potion the rest... Six T. Six June 10th, 2012, 02:50 PM Thickfreakness, then Rubber Factory (err... and maybe that one -don't remember the title but I think it's a EP- stuffed with covers of Jr Kimbrough songs) Chulahoma. One of my current favs. rcole_sooner June 11th, 2012, 03:43 PM I just bought and listened to Rubber Factory and Chulahoma. Very cool stuff. tele_pathic June 11th, 2012, 03:47 PM Thanks for everyone's input. I bought Brothers. Great fuzz tone, tons of hooks. Been learning it over the weekend. For all it's simplicity, it sounds really complex and cool. Mike Eskimo June 11th, 2012, 03:58 PM Brothers is great. Dan Auerbach's solo record is also very good. More varied than BK stuff. 9o4l10CtN7g LcpP53Ptw6Q Least favorite of mine is Magic Potion (It's the BK's least favorite album of theirs as well). Chulahoma is Auerbach's tip of the hat to Jr Kimbrough who he stole a lot from. Also recommended is the new Dr John record which Auerbach produced. He's all over it and it's very BK-esque. Also recommended is Elephant by the White Stripes... Well - that's what Pandora always plays w/ 'em. stevehyphen June 11th, 2012, 04:14 PM I'm all for anything except Attack & Release and El Camino. These two are definitely their weakest efforts. Personally, I've gone from Rubber Factory and Brothers as my favourites to Thickfreakness and The Big Come Up. guitarlifestyle June 11th, 2012, 04:24 PM I see you already bought Brothers, but I'd also recommend Thickfreakness to get a feel for their earlier style of raw, garage blues. jjlikesguitar June 12th, 2012, 03:30 PM Rubber Factory! WaylonFan76 June 12th, 2012, 03:42 PM I say pick and choose from soundbites. rcole_sooner June 12th, 2012, 03:59 PM I just listened to Brothers. My fist take is I like El Camino better than Brothers, not that Brothers is bad. I liked Rubber Factory and Chulahoma a lot more than Brothers (and maybe El Camino too). That was all just first listen (except El Camino, which I've had for a while). I'll listen to this batch, for a week or 2, and then grab a couple more. SpiderWeb June 12th, 2012, 04:16 PM Though I really like all of their albums, I would say that I like "El Camino" the best. I also really like Dan Auerbach's solo album "Keep It Hid." |
