Mulyes June 6th, 2012, 09:49 PM I've been wondering about this for a long time about when to put my guitars in their cases or keep them on the hooks on my wall. My friend said he keeps them out in the summer and stores them for the winter because he thinks that's common sense. So my question is, when and why should I store away the axes?
ludashoeless June 6th, 2012, 11:08 PM I always keep mine on the wall. It'd be a pain to keep them in cases
Kingpin June 7th, 2012, 12:29 AM if there are small children lurking about it's not a bad idea to put guitars away in the case when you've finished playing. if that isn't the situation--keep 'em out on the wall. You'll play them more often!
As far as the winter/summer issue goes, I recommend storing acoustics with a humidifier in their case during the winter, but solidbody electrics can be out all year 'round unless your home is exceptionally dry.
Mulyes June 7th, 2012, 08:27 AM I always have kept my acoustic and bass out, but I shall adjust to your guys' suggestions :) Thanks!
Turtleface June 7th, 2012, 08:52 AM Another quick note, don't hang them on an exterior wall, if possible. You can get pretty drastic temp difference front and back, especially in winter.
brewwagon June 7th, 2012, 12:59 PM i keep 3 on stands ready to play 5 amps to plug into and various effects
other guitars bass in the cases and some in cases in racks also a uke
my drum kit is also set up ready to go i keep a light blanket over it
also a keyboard ready to work out stuff on
tap4154 June 7th, 2012, 01:06 PM I like to keep one acoustic and one electric out (and a uke) and one Telecoustic hanging behind my couch... the rest in cases in the closet. Just rotate them on occasion, and it's like getting a new guitar  I also don't like leaving them all out in plain sight where anyone who comes to the door will see them, and maybe if anyone breaks in, they'll just grab what's on the wall, and leave
Arbiter June 7th, 2012, 01:15 PM If I'm not playing it, it's in a case.
I've worked in four music stores in my life. I don't recommend it. But I did learn something valuable; guitars left out get thrashed. It's a far faster process in a store than in your house, but the principle does not change.
My wife wants them out and displayed, thinks they're pretty and look cool (did I marry well or what?) but I'm not going there. Plus we live in earthquake country! If you've a got a guitar hanging on the wall and you get a good shaker, it isn't going to stay on the wall. My strats might survive such a fall, albeit with massive damage (we have tile floors). My OOO wouldn't.
akukulich June 7th, 2012, 01:26 PM I always like keeping my guitars where I can get to them easily. If that means a couple of more bumps and bruises on the, that's fine. They're meant to be played.
Mulyes June 8th, 2012, 11:04 AM Thanks for all the help guys. For now only my American special tele gets the privilege to be cased, others stay out ;)
AirBagTester June 8th, 2012, 11:46 AM A long time ago I left my bass guitar with a friend and he stored it on a stand below and to the right of his dartboard. Made a great picture: dartboard, stool, beer, bass...
Unfortunately he wasn't all that great at darts :/

Sounds like trouble waiting to happen haha

ludashoeless June 8th, 2012, 02:26 PM you can be like that's from the time my idiot friend threw a dart at my bass

It didn't bother me that much :) I definitely remember him and playing darts in his apartment when I play that bass, so yeah, it's kind of cool.
DeepSouth June 8th, 2012, 02:58 PM I put mine on the wall and in a case simultaneously. Just build some wall display cabinets with hangers - problem solved...

Sounds like a good idea. I just wasn't too sure if leaving the guitars out took a HUGE toll on them.

I agree. I do hang a number of guitars where they're handy, though. I'm VERY careful about taking them down and hanging them back up.

I was in Sherman Oaks for the Northridge Quake. I was thrown out of bed and then had my dresser on top of me. My guitars made it through because they were all in their cases at the time. Although there are a few faults near SW Ohio, the quake danger isn't nearly as great here. I'd gladly risk the quakes for a pied a terre back in my home state, though.
