I always liked the Isley Bros. Version - and never knew it was a young Jimi on there.

I'm also a big fan of the Taj Mahal version.

And there's been so many songs after Stagger Lee as well going off essentially the same elements. "Bad, Bad LeRoy Brown" is yet another take on the concept.
"Shaft" is yet another. The idea of one bad mo'fo will always be good song fodder.
Lynryd Skynyrds 'Gimme 3 steps" is another and the list is endless.

Great article...what caught my eye was "Folk songs like this one seem like one of the few remaining connections to a pre-literate world." I'm impressed with good songs that are an oral tradition-music can be very powerful in this regard. It literally makes history come alive for me. Vernon Dalhart's The Wreck of the Old 97 is an example.

And Andy...Doc's guitar on Stackolee sounded like a clear mountain stream-freakin' beautiful.
