ToneShark June 4th, 2012, 03:58 PM Seriously. Best $120 or so I've ever spent on a pedal, probably. With a Tele, it's a no-brainer. Does a great job of fattening things up ever so slightly. It's a great always-on pedal to put in the front of a pedalboard, or even by itself into the amp. I run mine with the knob all the way down, which is just a slight bump over unity, and it's amazing how much better I've felt about my sound and playing the last few gigs with it.
I never, ever thought I'd find something that does this slight boost/sweetening thing as well or better than my Klon for anything but stupid money, but it turns out I was wrong. And now I get to use my Klon as a solo boost instead of an always-on clean boost, which is an added bonus.

Teleglide June 4th, 2012, 04:13 PM Looks like my board, which also has a Klon (almost the exact same settings) and an EP Booster (knob turned all the way off). Love 'em both. Nowadays the EP Booster is the one to get. Affodrable, simple and it sounds great!
stevieboy June 4th, 2012, 04:14 PM That's not too hard to do, they generally have them at Guitar Center even.
Great pedal, the only one I use--but I have tried it with some different ODs and it worked very well with each of them. It just occurred to me one day, "Wait a minute, I don't really need an OD, the EP Booster is fine by itself!"
Dr. Pants June 4th, 2012, 04:28 PM Already did. Then I sold it.
I wasn't anywhere near as taken
with the EP boost as others.
I've since built two versions of
the Madbean Fat Pants EP pre-amp
style booster. The FP is what I was
hoping the EP would have been.
Now back to your program already in progress.
artdecade June 4th, 2012, 05:07 PM Dr. Pants and I are on the same page. It was kind of a "Meh Experience" after all of the hype.
Rich_S June 4th, 2012, 08:10 PM I haven't tried the EP, just because it's more money thatn I'll spend for a non-exssential. I built a Fat Pants with a 3-position EQ switch.
MASONish June 4th, 2012, 08:30 PM Agreed on the EP. If you love it try a Voodoo Lab Giggity. This is "the one" to get. Very very versatile preamp.
gtrguru June 4th, 2012, 09:42 PM I love my EP Booster.
TB72 June 5th, 2012, 12:28 AM Had one of the early models, and sold it. I wanted to use it for a solo boost, but even with the knob at minimum, it was too much of a volume bump.
The newer ones will do unity gain at minimum settings, so I picked up another one. I'm enjoying it a lot more now.
Later...
Lance June 5th, 2012, 07:13 AM I also started with the first version and traded to a new unity gain model. It's always on....just makes the amp sound better. Mine is last in the chain before the amp.
schenkadere June 5th, 2012, 08:06 AM How does it work with humbuckers?
Lance June 5th, 2012, 08:34 AM I have a bunch of different guitars (gibson/gretsch/fender/prs)....it doesn't seem to make a difference. They all sound better. It's a high frequency response thing...the EP seems to take wool off your signal and make it crystal clear....but not in a harsh way.
So, I use mine for a slight boost to add clarity. There may be difference between single coils/humbuckers when using it for a higher level of gain.
blowtorch June 5th, 2012, 08:50 AM Don't have a EP Booster, but I love my Nocturne Atomic Brain!
Tomlin_Guitars June 5th, 2012, 08:55 AM Most single JFET boosters will do the same thing. I built a kit from General Guitar Gadgets of a Stratoblaster booster and it does the exact same thing as the EP booster as far as my ears can tell. The kit is only $38 but you must build it yourself but it was a relatively simple and quick build.

Axis29 has one. Great pedal....but different than an EP. It's much more aggressive and gritty.

Yeah....I know what you're saying. This is somewhat different. There's some EQ stuff happening in the EP beyond the boost part.
JohnK24 June 5th, 2012, 09:11 AM How does it work with humbuckers?
Unless you play through a VERY bright amp, I'd say no. I had v2.0 of the EP Booster and even with the treble boost internal dip switch "on", the pedal added too much bass to my P90 Les Paul (into a Hot Rod Deluxe) this was with the external knob set around 9 o'clock. It adds a really nice 3D shimmer to teles and if I had the Hot Rod working with the bright switch "on" and the bass rolled back to around 9 o'clock, the EP Booster was great.
I returned mine, doesn't couldn't deal with the bass boost...if they would give you the option to limit the bass boost, this would be a really cool pedal. I emailed Xotic and asked if version 1 would be better as it has an internal switch for bass boost on/off. I was told, no, version 2.0 is designed as having the bass boost "off". So....a bright Vox or fender black/silver faced amp and a thinner sounding tele/strat...this would be a great pedal. imho
uriah1 June 5th, 2012, 10:12 AM Agreed on the EP. If you love it try a Voodoo Lab Giggity. This is "the one" to get. Very very versatile preamp.
I was curious about the giggity..especially the voicing and dynamic eq...hard to voice properly neck p/u with most preamps...out there..
dalandan June 5th, 2012, 11:22 AM EP is for realz
Modern Saint June 5th, 2012, 11:48 AM Love mine!

Same here, and I do play a 6120!
blowtorch June 5th, 2012, 03:11 PM 6118 here, but all my guits sound great through it
stevieboy June 5th, 2012, 03:18 PM I tend to use mine with Fender single coils, don't really think I need it with P90s or humbuckers. That's personal taste of course, and I tend to not like pedals much. The EP Booster is a great pedal for people who aren't that into pedals.

Thanks for the info...I don't need any bass boost.
ToneShark June 5th, 2012, 03:51 PM I'm not getting a ton of extra bass... I think that's more of a problem if you're trying to use the pedal as a solo boost or something. Not exactly what it was designed to do. The EP Booster works best if you turn it on, leave it on, EQ your rig around it, and go nuts. I'm sure with some amps and/or some guitars (or some pickup types), it doesn't help as much and maybe even works against you, but this is the Tele forum, and I haven't found a pedal that sweetens up a Tele this nicely since my Klon, hence the thread. Fattening up the tone a little is the entire point, though... so if you don't want to fatten up your tone, then I guess this isn't the right pedal for you.
gtrguru June 5th, 2012, 03:55 PM Thanks for the info...I don't need any bass boost.
I never got much of a bass boost, but their is an internal dip switch that is kind of a bright switch that clears things up. I think Xotic refers to it as vintage mode.
smoss469 June 5th, 2012, 07:30 PM I don't know about everyone else, but just the fact that someone with a $3,500 setup (excluding guitar) is raving about the cheapest pedal he has (not counting tuner)... I enjoy that for some reason.

Ha, whoa. For real. I love all that stuff, though... I could probably start a similarly ardent love-thread for any of the things pictured there. Especially that guitar. CS 53 Heavy Relic. MMM.
I tell you - I've been through a gazillion pieces of gear over the years from one rig to the next to the next... and I've said this before (and will probably say it again about a different rig), but this rig is damn near perfect, at least for what I'm playing these days.
I just wish I wasn't also lugging 2 other Teles (b-bender and a baritone) and a pedal steel and an acoustic and everything else that goes along with all that to every gig. Because for a quick easy LIGHT grab-and-go rig, this would be tough to beat.
inanevoyage June 7th, 2012, 09:05 AM Coincidentally, I just picked one of these up yesterday! So, so happy with the tone difference. I'm just wondering why I didn't do this sooner.
I put it after my Keeley compressor and Mastotron fuzz, but before my OCD and '78 Custom Badass distortions. This seems to be an alright place for it to live for now.
Jagg76 June 8th, 2012, 01:35 PM Given the choice, I'd rather have the RC Booster...
