I ordered a Super Paul Bunyan bridge pickup from David Plummer (Zhangbucker Pickups (http://www.zhangbucker.com/)) a few weeks back and it arrived a few days ago. I've had a chance to play it out in my Hwy 1 a couple of times now and I thought I'd give my impressions.
First off I had mine underwound to 10k in an attempt to retain some twang. The normal SPB is wound to 10.5k. The SPB also uses big A5 rods to help get the desired sound.
The first thing I noticed is how tall and heavy it is. This is a monster of a pickup! It's beautifully made. I had mine wrapped with white string because that's my preference.
I had the guitar out on Sat and Sun. at a couple of jams and after I played on Sat I had a number of enthusiastic and unsolicited comments on how great the Tele sounded. Cool.
When I was designing the pickup with David I sent him some YouTube clips of Vince Gill and Robben Ford and said I wanted a pickup that would get me in that ballpark. I hear some similarity of tone in both of their Teles. Maybe it's just me. So I would say I'm in that ballpark with this pickup.
There's still some twang in there but it almost needs to be coaxed out a bit. I play mostly blues, funk and rootsy sort of rock and this is a really nice sound for those styles.
I'd call it ballsy and tough sounding but still with characteristic Tele tones. The bottom strings don't have quite the same degree of characteristic Tele brassy-ness to them but the sound is tight and focused still.
There's no ice pick on the higher notes, just thick and lively notes that jump out effortlessly. There's an overall shimmer to the sound and it's very touch responsive as well.
So I'm really pleased with it. David's a great guy to do buisness with and I'd definitely recommend trying one of his fine, fine products.
