Morrels pre-cat lacquer thinning question

What consistency must the lacquer be to avoid orange peel using a small hvlp gun? or what ratio of lacquer to thinners is best. Will increasing the pressure help -the gun is suppposed to work to between 30-40psi, which seems to low.
The spray area seems to have a small footprint compared to an aerosol can and I have to hold it quite close (6").

After a bit of mucking about I've sorted the problem out fine, no bungles!
