Clear Coat Questions

Hi everyone,
I'm just about done applying the color coats on my latest build, and I have a few questions before I move on to applying the clearcoats, as the directions on ReRanch aren't as clear on this step as they are about others.

1. Should I wet sand the final color coat before moving to clear?

2. How many coats of clear should I put on, how long should I wait between them, and should I sand in between?

3. How long should I wait for it to cure before doing a final wet sand? I've heard up to a month, but I'm only planning on applying one can, and having an incredible "factory" finish isn't all that important to me (just an acceptable one without orange peel, etc haha).

Thanks in advance for the help,
Adam

P.S. I'm using all ReRanch nitro products, about a can each for sand and sealer, primer, and color.

If the color coats look ok, just start spraying clear. If you have any drips, runs or really bad splatters, you can lightly sand them out now.

Otherwise, just start spraying clear. You want to use a can or more. The more clear you lay down, the less chance of wet sanding through to the color. Don't sand between clear coats. If it's real warm where you are, wait a good 3 weeks or more for the clear to harden up before wet sanding. Be careful when approaching edges and contours, because paint is usually thinner there.

Thanks for the response. The final color coat feels a bit rough (though there are no visible runs or anything). I was under the impression that you needed to get the surface completely smooth before the clear...

Thanks flatfive!

I was just searching the reranch site for the same thing, couldn't find the answer, and came here knowing I'd find something!

I completly missed the link to page two... ::face palm::
