Just got my first tele...'99 Fender MIM standard. It had a stripped-out truss rod nut. I fished it out of there, and now I need a new one. I checked the local music stores, none of them carry any in stock. I looked online, and it looks like there's a few different dimensions available. I'm not sure which one I need. The online descriptions are pretty vague. I guess what I need to know is will the american standard one fit it? The outside diameter is 5/16, and the inside diameter is 3/16

It's a nut, so diameters aren't enough information. You need to know the the bolt size and thread pitch that it's meant to fit. But it shouldn't be that difficult, this isn't a hardware store bushing, it's is a standard Fender replacement part. Try guitarparts resource.com. Under hardware, they have a category of truss nuts. You want a Mexican standard truss rod nut, Fender part no. 003-8454-000.

So there is a difference between the mexican one and the american one. I've seen many people get on here and swear up and down that mexi teles and american teles are made with the same hardware. Well, thanks for answering and sharing that site. Anyway, it says mexican, so I'll try it out.
