how should I finish this Pinecaster body I just got?Jazzerstang June 1st, 2012, 11:00 PM what do you think? http://www.8fdtexas.com/J/52912/IMG_2265.JPG http://www.8fdtexas.com/J/52912/IMG_2270.JPG Shepherd June 2nd, 2012, 04:16 AM This thread should give you some ideas http://www.tdpri.com/forum/guitar-owners-clubs/175019-pinecaster-club.html dsutton24 June 2nd, 2012, 06:15 PM This one is Tru-Oil http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa205/dsutton24/PineEsquire2.png Jazzerstang June 3rd, 2012, 02:29 PM This thread should give you some ideas http://www.tdpri.com/forum/guitar-owners-clubs/175019-pinecaster-club.html yeah, that's pretty awesome. SixShooter June 3rd, 2012, 04:57 PM This one is Tru-Oil http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa205/dsutton24/PineEsquire2.png Nice. What kind of pine is that? telechucker June 3rd, 2012, 06:30 PM Well, like dsutton24 above, I favour the clear finish and a blackguard. Just my .02 Jazzerstang June 3rd, 2012, 09:34 PM the neck that's going on it is a 60s classic series MIM. I'll still go blackguard, but has anyone ever used the darker tinted variety Watco danish oil? Jazzerstang June 4th, 2012, 07:17 PM what about shellac? TNO June 4th, 2012, 08:49 PM I did a spruce body in fresh-mixed garnet shellac sprayed through a preval. Came out really nice. A penetrating finish wouldn't be my first choice for pine since it has a rep for soaking up finish unevenly. Pics of the spruce tele here: https://post.craigslist.org/manage/3047328944 I sprayed, level sanded and polished out the neck and body in one day each. Shellac dries FAST. risingsun189 June 4th, 2012, 09:49 PM maybe an aniline dye, i've never seen it done on pine but if it looks anything like it does on maple then it'll be stunning. Jazzerstang June 8th, 2012, 08:33 PM Oooh baby bayybay. You'll see how this comes out within the next couple of days. now the question is-- should I esquire it? or tele it? Jazzerstang June 20th, 2012, 10:23 PM OK, so here it is... Kind of crappy pictures, but It turned out pretty good. An esquire style beauty: http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/dd395/Mikea83/MyFavoriteInstruments-Summer2012001.jpg http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/dd395/Mikea83/MyFavoriteInstruments-Summer2012002.jpg http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/dd395/Mikea83/MyFavoriteInstruments-Summer2012003.jpg http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/dd395/Mikea83/MyFavoriteInstruments-Summer2012004.jpg http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/dd395/Mikea83/MyFavoriteInstruments-Summer2012005.jpg http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/dd395/Mikea83/MyFavoriteInstruments-Summer2012007.jpg http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/dd395/Mikea83/MyFavoriteInstruments-Summer2012008.jpg http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/dd395/Mikea83/MyFavoriteInstruments-Summer2012009.jpg http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/dd395/Mikea83/MyFavoriteInstruments-Summer2012010.jpg http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/dd395/Mikea83/MyFavoriteInstruments-Summer2012014.jpg 61fury June 20th, 2012, 10:49 PM Jazzerstang that is the best looking pine finish. Nice and warm and piney, good looking wear on it too. Jazzerstang June 20th, 2012, 10:54 PM Thanks 61 Walter Broes June 21st, 2012, 06:00 AM Looks great! So what finish did you end up using? czook June 21st, 2012, 08:49 AM the neck that's going on it is a 60s classic series MIM. I'll still go blackguard, but has anyone ever used the darker tinted variety Watco danish oil? I used the Golden Oak Watco Danish oil on my last build. Yours turned out great ! Looks like Tru-oil, but not sure. Jazzerstang June 21st, 2012, 09:42 AM Amber Zinser shellac-- I wanted the guitar to just be that, but it wore so easily, so I did my sanding and distressing and put a thin layer of poly over it. allen082 June 21st, 2012, 01:40 PM that color is great. 63dot June 21st, 2012, 02:01 PM You can go for the pre-Broadcaster look (Fender prototypes and one and two pickup Fender Esquire) and go with black or '50s Studebaker red*. Yeah, supposedly, there were also some red prototypes in pine (below): http://www.tdpri.com/forum/bad-dog-cafe/331880-has-anybody-ever-heard-red-fender-testbed-guitar.html http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVOKvdUO-ek&feature=related http://www.plan59.com/trucks/trucks124.htm HiggyDude June 21st, 2012, 02:28 PM Very nice- I like the more "amber" natural finishes - even though I own a natural finish Am. Std. Tele. I am in the process of finishing a pine body myself - trying to decide how to color it - with dyes, wiped into the body or sprayed on... That is a great looking guitar. |
