Finishing the neck

Hey guys I just got a new neck and painted a design on it with a black marker
I then noticed that the painting faded away as I touched it just a bit, so is there way I could finish it to make it not fade if I touch it?

Shoot a clear coat on top? Just test it on a scrap first to make sure the clear coat won't dissolve the paint though.
